Hirai on Home: "Doesn't matter when we launch"

No they're not, but Sony isn't what they were when the PS2 was at it's peak. They were in a tier with no one else in it.

It's hard to say in any way that the PS3 has dominated like the PS2 did.

That was never going to happen again, if you thought so then your predictions were to high.

However it's still far to early to judge the PS3 against the PS2 anyway.

You're comparing a 9 year old device, to one which is less than 2 years old.

Analysts would actually point you towards graphs that show the PS3 is selling on par with/slightly better than the PS2 did in it's first 2 years anyway... I'm not making that up either, it's quite true.

PS2 dominated more as a cheapo DVD player and less as a gaming machine. At least in my personal contact more than 50% of people bought it as a cheap DVD player that also plays games. PS3 might have the same thing going on for it if the "price is right" when people start looking for BD players. There is also that angle of failing drives on PS2 and some/many ended up buying it twice. To add on it, XBOX and gamecube did not have as much "mindshare" as XBOX 360 and Wii have. Many promotions, movies and TV shows now show people playing XBOX 360 or Wii. My hunch - PS3 is not going to repeat PS2's run but then I might be completely wrong and shooting out of my ass as far as predictions go.
