Installing VirtualPC 2007 slows down wireless internet connection?

Recommended Posts

I have vista home premium and while it's not a supported os for vpc2007, it does install. I used it for about a day....did what I needed with it and then got rid of it.

Here is my problem:

Both IE7 and Firefox 3.01 are super slow in loading pages. At times both will actually time out.

Downloads are super slow also.

I have run a/v scan, spyware/adware scans and nothing has shown up. As far as I can tell I have no rootkit.

I have gone into safe mode and it still does this.

Why would virtualpc basically kill my internet? And if it is vpc, why would it continue after being uninstalled? Short of a format and reinstall, any thoughts/opinions/ideas?

Also, I installed truecrypt 6 the day before, but that seems be ok, no slow downs or anything. I did follow the programs advice and allow it to disable windows pagefile.

My computer info:

home premium sp1 w/ all updates and security packs

c2d t7500, 4gb ram

250 gb hd, 4 partitions

intel pro/wireless 3945 abg wireless

I didn't notice that when I installed VPC2007. Did you notice the slow downs when you were running a virtual machine? I know some virtualization programs (VMware comes to mind, not sure about VPC2007) adds a "virtual" network interface. This might have something to do with it.

The first thing I'd try is uninstalling the Intel wireless drivers, and reinstall them again.

Have you tried uninstalling truecrypt? Did you encrypt anything?

Also, for a free virtualization program, I recommend Virtualbox. It's free and I find it to be faster than all the other virtualization programs.

TC is be unistalled in a few hours. There is no virtual network interface. As far as I can tell, vpc uninstalled correctly. My work with a virtual program is finished for now.

EDIT: I will also say that I have used TC 5 and never had a problem with the internet. So I don't know if it's the new version or if it's TC at all.

I don't think it can be TC, but I was just wondering in case you encrypted your whole drive lol.

Yeah, I'd recommend reinstalling the Intel wireless drivers, and see how that goes. If that doesn't work, we can investigate more.

Well if you let TC disable the page file, then sure you can have all kinds of Weird/Strange issues.. Which I think might be the default?? Which is just plain nuts!

Disabling the pagefile in a home environment since encrypted stuff you open might be stored in the pagefile unencrypted is paranoia to the level you really should seek medical care about!! Do the black helicopters circling your house keep you up at night? ;)

What could you have on your home machine that could require that sort of security? Who exactly is going to be accessing your pagefile to access your data?

I love some of the high level encryption stuff they are doing lately -- but come on.. This sort of thing is problems/dataloss just waiting to happen for the average joe user. And is really just way over the top for anything other than dod/gov/military/nsa/cia etc.

Not even HIPAA requires such precautions. I would suggest you re-enable your page file! If you want to use TC, sure more power to you its a great product. If your worried about what might be in your pagefile -- then encrypt it as well ;)

Which is really what they suggest.

Solution: Encrypt the system partition/drive (for information on how to do so, see the chapter System Encryption) and make sure that all paging files are located on one or more of the partitions within the key scope of system encryption (which they typically are, by default), for example, on the partition where Windows is installed

I ran into the same issue with XP PRO- And VPC2007. But The issue is this- Make sure that for the VM that you use the shared NAT option instead of the Network Card. Once I switched that option The internet stays constant, but is very slow when Using the internet on The Virtual OS. But is fast in the regular desktop.

The why I think it does that is, because they are conflicting the network card.

Example your os is trying to run a KNe-TX100 (network card) and the Virtual OS is trying to run the Same Card at the same time.

The above is just an example even though you may be running a different card (wireless).

Well I spent the better part of 6 hours removing TC and then re-enabled the page file. Let's see how that works.

My internet is still slower then hell. I just don't get it. Some pages load just fine, like neowin, cnn, monster. Some won't load at all, like craigslist, engagdet. Live Hotmail takes 2 minutes to load. This is over an 802 g wireless connection with a consistent 4-5 bars. Any ideas? I am fully thinking of data backup and formatting today.

    • Anyway to download these versions without being on the Experimental builds?
    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
