Installing sound drivers on Ubuntu

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm very new to Linux. I've literally had my first interaction with it only minutes ago, so please be kind, and please try and keep it simple.

Anyway, my problem is pretty much with my sound card. I can't seem to get any sound to come out of it, so I'm pretty sure it has to do with the driver, but the one i downloaded from the Hercules website doesn't even open... probably because it's meant for windows.

So is there a solution to my problem?

Thanks in advance

The sound should probably be working out of the box if its supported, otherwise this might be tricky to get it working again. Did the website have Linux drivers available?

Sadly no. Does this mean I will have to get a new sound card for it to work with this OS?

Edit: a small amount of research has shown me that other people have managed to get this card to work, but none explain how they did it.

Try checking alsamixer (run at the command line) to make sure you aren't muted or such.

Most cards will "just work", but some high-end specialty cards don't have enough released information to the community for a driver to be written.

Try the muting check. Also did sound work with Ubuntu as a liveCD? Maybe the output of a lspci -v command would be helpful, too, to identify how your audio card is identified.

I had a very similar problem - only installed Ubuntu the other day and found that sound was not working.

The guys in #alsa on irc.freenode.net were very, very helpful - they will probably be able to help you if it a problem with ALSA.
