Any good Wireless Routers compatible with Vista?

Recommended Posts

wrt54gl with any third party firmware like tomato or dd-wrt and its the best.

I got an old wrt54gv5 which it happens the same problems of connection freeze, and have to restart so i put a micro version and it works like charm, a ROUTER its OS independent, i have mostly vista laptop and it runs great.

Ive got a WRT54GL Access point that links my network via a WRT54GL WET Bridge, I'm running Vista and I can say that it is snappy and compatible...

Due to distance my transfer speeds are only around 2200KB/sec max but I'm aiming to resolve this with a powerline network..

Switched LAN Transfer is fine and I've had no crashes...

Uptime 10 days, 05:00:34

CPU Load (1 / 5 / 15 mins) 0.00 / 0.00 / 0.00

Total / Free Memory 14.14 MB / 3,888.00 KB (26.84%)

Previous uptime was 93 Days, I upgraded the firmware which explains the 10 day uptime

There is actually such a thing as a Vista compatible router. It's due to the way Microsoft re-wrote the TCP/IP stack, and the traffic scaling it does. Some older routers have problems forwarding these packets.

Yup. There is some trickery going on with Vista. Also some routers are "plug and play" which in some cases eliminates the need to login to your router to setup static port forwards to a particular computer. There is also the "Internet Gateway Device" that shows up in your Network Devices that allows the user to setup port forwarding and firewall settings without actually logging into the router.

All that being said,

Any router should be "compatible" with any OS (in the sense that it supports the same Ethernet standards as any other network router).

IGD is simply uPNP (Universal Plug and Play)

This router is junk!

Exactly and everyone is insisting that I use it instead of upgrading because it's "stable." That router is too old. I had to upgrade. Unfortunately, I bought a Netgear WNR834B which frequently crashes and according to the reviews I read, I ain't the only one having that problem.

NO ONE keeps saying to use it. We wanted to know what it was. I still say update the firmware and see it it works. I keep linking you (as others are) to the WRT54GL which is the router you should buy and put the custom firmware on it and is the best consumer router on the market.

WRT54 Looks the same but its not junk.

If your not gonna read and take in the help thats given, why are you asking for it?

Seven separate people have recommended the Linksys WRT54G series (mainly: WRT54GL) w/ custom firmware. That's the most conclusive you are going to get. As hfj288 says, if you aren't going to take the help, why ask? Go to Best Buy and pick up another garbage router if you want.

Ok ok. I just got back from work. I'll have to wait for the weekend to go to the store. Besides I have to return the Netgear first. Besides, I just looked that up. The specifications doesn't say that it's compatible with Vista.

Someone else said it was junk and I just agreed. No one here is actually helping. I'm asking for a GOOD VISTA COMPATIBLE ROUTER!!! Microsoft has a list of them. http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/ProductLi...d=712&f=86b

Now, let me try to simplify the question. On that link, which one of those routers are good? Now, keep in mind, it must be on that list.

God Damnit. It IS VISTA COMPATIBLE

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c...d=2962541396L15

I (along with 7 others here) have this router. Two of my machines are Windows Vista. it works JUST FINE. Microsoft is just reccomending draft 802.11n routers. its just Marketing. Again, its like saying a pre-vista computer can't run vista, even though it has a Core2Duo.

I'm going to PM a mod and have this thread closed.

Obviously you seem to know more then all the others in this thread, so the go buy one off of that list. I promise it will be nowhere near as good as the WRT54GL that we have been telling you.

What the hell? If you're getting so upset, then just don't post. On that list, those are the routers that have been fully tested for Vista. You don't know much, believe me. You said there's no such thing as Vista compatible routers and many people have proved you wrong. And trust me, it's not marketing. My older Linksys had the TCP/IP issue that was mentioned earlier. Why are you insisting that routers don't have compatibility issues with Vista when I've experienced the issues myself?

Seriously...go away. Just buy whatever crap you want off that list, and be done with it.

Because you keep showing your ignorance to marketing ploys and keep thinking that list is god.

So what. Microsoft doesn't spend a billion dollars testing every piece of hardware on the market.

There is no such thing as a Vista"COMPATIBLE" router. A router is a router. The firmware on the router might be "opimized" for vista, but old routers work the same. The routers / switches our school uses are at least 8 years old, yet guess what they run vista.

I did. It was the Netgear and it crashes. So, I'm asking if anyone can recommend one off the list that's good. Why is this question so difficult??

Then how do you explain the TCP/IP issue that I was experiencing with my old router?? I had some sorta Vista problem with it. What else can it be?

Because we reccomended you the best router on the market and because you can't get past the microsoft marketing, you don't believe us.

End of story.

No idea. Its extremely old. We're talking around 7-8 years old. The Linksys we keep reccomending you has custom firmware which keeps getting updated. Heck the latest update was this past month.

Ok, I will go to Best Buy this weekend and return my Netgear router. I will then buy the Linksys WRT54GL. I can only pray that it will perform the way you said it would.

So, I'm going to take the advice that's given to me. Now, I hope we can all be friends again.

I got a very modest Dlink G604T - have used it for many many moons and have had no issues from vista. you turn it on, configure and away you go.

Hell, I have a WRT54G v8 with the latest stock FW, it's working just fine with two Vista SP1 machines, two XP Pro SP3 machines, and a PCLinuxOS 2007 machine. One XP machine and the linux machine both have a Trendnet TEW-443PI wireless card in them. They all work just fine. The only thing about it not being "Vista Compatible" might have been the router setup cd, but I didn't/wouldn't use it anyway.

Wait... did you finally realize? :woot: Wow... well...

You won't be disappointed in the WRT54G. If you still have problems, at least we will know it's not the router. ;)

Some routers are indeed problematic with Vista. It is luckily a small subset of routers. Almost all of these routers had their incompatibilities fixed with firmware updates shortly after Vista's release (some before Vista's release). If you have a router that is entering reboot loops (a symptom of being incompatible with Vista), then check for firmware update. Chances are good that one is available that fixes your problem.

The problem lies in part with Receive Window Auto-Tuning, and in part with ECN.

Just because a router is old, or not labeled as "Vista Compatible", doesn't mean it won't work with Vista. Odds are extremely good that it'll work regardless. For example, I've got a four year old WRT54GS that works wonderfully with Vista. I've also got a DLink DGL-4300. Not labeled as Vista compatible, but it works fine nonetheless. Also got a couple of FON's. They also aren't labeled as being Vista compatible, but, surprise, they also work.

tl;dr, it was always a small problem that is far less common now than it was last year. Don't worry about it.

It's not outdated.

Its 802.11G.

How much faster do you actually need? If you are looking for a draft N, then your limited . Its hands-down the best 802.11G router on the market, which unless you plan on transferring gig's of data over your network, its plenty fast for the internet

Heres this 802.11n router with DD-WRT

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16833124085

Not sure on it, but DD-WRT is the best firmware to date

While I do like DD-WRT, I would instead prefer the WRT54GS (not GL) as being Linksys' best G router; especially with the 2.x chipset/firmware (which works a treat with DD-WRT). Also, there is a quibble that I have with DD-WRT (in fact, most Linksys third-party firmware): the problems with IPv6. However this is an ongoing issue with routers in general. And given that draft-N is still *draft*, what's the issue preventing draft-N from becoming real-N? While most draft-N routers do offer built-in gigabit switching capability (which is useful with more wired desktops supporting gigabit), the fact that draft-N is still *draft* has me nervous.

    • Exactly. They won't go 100 because current gen consoles are simply too old for any groundbreaking graphics or gaming experience otherwise. They will go with standard (console) price 70 or go with 80 if they really want to go premium. Of course they will have more expensive options too with some useless cosmetics as always.
    • Doesn’t surprise me at all. God is light & He gave us life so it sounds almost logical that we would therefore emit a certain amount of light.
    • This is what I want. Hey Gemini, how do I remove you from all my google products permanently?
    • I would never install install this build before rtm process. only 3 months to go. never install on your daily devices. just wait 3 months.
