Help with DNS setup

Recommended Posts

Hi guys

So i recently got a VPS with a dedicated IP (only 1 ip) and I was trying to create nameservers so that Ican point my domain to those and get working...

Now I watched and followed this tutorial :

and it showed me how to make a master zone (ns1.mydomain.com).......but it did not show how to make the ns2.mydomain.com

I am a complate novice at this so I am very confused...how do I make the 2nd (ns2) dns???

Thanks

You will need to add ns2 under both the A records and Name servers.

However as you seem to only have 1 box and 1 ip there will not be much point, usually ns1 and ns2 point to 2 different servers (one being master the other being slave) so if one goes down the other can still answer authoritatively for your domain.

What OS/distro are you attempting this with? I currently can't access youtube because I am on a network that blocks it. :pinch:

debian 4

Would I add the ns2 one the same way as the ns1 one? just replacing where I put ns1 with ns2?

also when i go to my domain registrar i just enter one ns1 thing? i don't need the ns2 one? Is there any other way (free) to compensate for the 2nd ip?

Yes just add it in the same way. obviously if you use a slave server the ip on the A record should point to the slave server.

There are some services out there which will provide slave hosting for your dns, http://www.zoneedit.com/

Its recommended you have atleast 2 name servers im not sure if there is any official rfc which says you must.

Why do you think you need to host your own dns on your VPS?????

Zoneedit is more than capable of handling any records you might want for your domain.. There is NO NEED to host your own dns for 1 IP address.

Zoneedit can host dns up to 5 domains for you for FREE.. all records you might need, shoot they are 1 of the few that support SPF records.

Again you have NO NEED of running any type of named services on your server - NONE!! At your registrar point to the zoneedit nameservers - and then just manage your records on the zoneedit website. Their changes are almost instant as well.
