Which power supply?

Recommended Posts

My current power supply Antec-Earthwatts-500-W Supply died aftrer less than 7 months of use.

I am buying today a new power supply I just havent decided yet which power supply to go with.

These are the two choices I have in mind:

Antec Earthwatts EA-650

or the

Cooler Master eXtreme 650

Has anyone here used any of these two power supplies?

Cheers

What is your budget and what are you currently powering?

Well I dont want to spend more than $85.00. I am running a Vista Premium on a AMD Opteron 174 Oced to 2.7GHZ and 2 GB of RAM. For GPU I have a 9600GT.

I dont think I need more than 400W supply but I just wanted to get a bit more in case I upgrade my PC in a few months...

Since you are in Macedonia, is there any other online retailers that you can shop besides JR's?

Lol, I am from Macedonia but i live in the US.

So any retail store would work. JNR is just more convenient since I also get discount from them, and I can pick up the PS right away.

I dont want to wait for shipping.... I guess I can also do Best Buy but they are a bit more expensive...

Well I thought it was a little funny that JR's had worldwide shipping but I went along with it. :p

Even though you said you hate to wait for shipping, I'm still going to recommend this Seasonic from Newegg. Besides the established quality of Seasonic, you get a 5 year warranty as well.

If your old one only last 7 months, I'd get in touch with the manufacturer if I were you and get it replaced under warranty. I had a power supply go recently, but fortunately it had a 3 year warranty as standard, and was still 6 months from the end of it so they not only gave me a new one, but upgraded me to some crazy way over the top modular than.g.

It looks interesting... I am going on a two week vacation though in three days so I need to get my PC up and running tonight....

Yeah I know... The problem is I dont keep my receipts... I purchased it from Compusa...

Also I need to get my PC up and running tonight...

Sounds like you really have no other choice if it is mission critical that you have it up before you leave.

Even if you don't have your receipt, I still think Antec would be reasonable if you wanted to RMA when you get back. Could you possibly buy one from JRs and just return it when you get back? Probably not too legal, but you seem to have little options.

I'll try and call Antec tomorrow and see how far I'll get with their customer support... If nothing else I'll get a second PS and then sell one of them on ebay...

Thanks guys

I didn't keep a receipt either (it was 2.5 years old!), but I explained what had happened to Tagen, they asked for the PSU's serial number because they'll go by the date of manufacture rather than the date of purchase if the date of purchase is unavailable and all was well.

I currently have the Cooler Master PSU and have no regrets about it, but I agree with the OP that you should contact your PSU manufacturer and RMA your current PSU which I think must still be on warranty.

You'd regret it once you realize that it's an overpowered Seventeam platform.

The Earthwatts is pretty weak on the 12v for a 650 unit. For that kind of system a 450VX could power it though..coming in 20 or so dollars under your budget.

    • It saddens me when cars are such dull colours now. Mine is bright metallic blue and I absolutely adore it for standing out in contrast to that depressing backdrop of traffic.

    • lol it was a typo, fixed! haha imagine an actual 4TB Gen4 NVMe for $40 in 2026
    • Get over it, has nothing to do with my point.
    • I really don't like these rounded corners and huge borders in the viewport. They just waste space without anything in return.
