Help with Print Sharing on a Netgear MR814 Router

Recommended Posts

I just purchased this unit and had the internet up in a snap! Genuinely impressed.

However, I have a problem sharing a printer so far that I was hoping for some help with.

Printer is an HP PhotoSmart 1115 connected via USB via a USB HUB to COMPUTER A

COMPUTER A is a P3-600 Desktop running XP PRO, connected to the MR814 via RJ45 to Port 1. It has full internet access. Computer A is on a workgroup called HOME. IP is 192.168.0.10. I have shared out the printer on this computer as HPPS1115 (8 character) and rebooted.

COMPUTER B is a HP Pavillon ZE4200 Celeron 1.6 Laptop. running XP HOME It is using a wireless card and its IP is 192.168.0.11. It has full internet access, its workgroup is also HOME.

I have not been able to see the printer on the notebook at all. Does the client PC (COMPUTER B) need to have a login PROFILE that matches one on COMPUTER A?

Any help would be appreciated. Please let me know if I left out any pertinent information.

Make sure you have NetBIOS enabled.

I have two computer via my Linksys router, and have my Printer Shared in Windows XP.

I turned off Netbios Sharing connectivity for 6 months, I couldn't ever figure out what it was that broke my Networking until th:D week. :D

Make sure you go to the computer with the printer that its attached to and right click it an CLICK "Sharing" and give it a share name etc.

Then use the add printer wizard in your os to add it as a network printer from the remote pc that the printer is NOT attached to.

If netbios is enabled over tcp/ip on both computers and the printer is on and attached you should be able to use it across the network.

Make sure the computers both have the same Workgroup name / domain connection.

Windows XP Is smart enough that it will add it automatically as i've noticed in my printer folder of printers called "AUTO < printername> on <computername"

Thanks xStainDx -

I already have the printer shared as an 8 character file name (just to be safe). Both are on the same workgroup called HOME. I will try enabling NETBIOS now on both to try it again. Correct me if I am wrong though, I thought NETBIOS was only used in communicating to Novell based OS's? Is that not the case? I don't have NETBIOS installed on either of my WINXP PC's...

Thanks!
