How I Created Portable Ventrilo (Kinda)

Question

(I hope this is in the right section....I thought this could be in a number of different ones)

So here I was, bored out of my skull and talking on Ventrilo for the first time in months. I got thirsty and wanted to get a Pepsi but I had none in the house. I didn't want to leave Ventrilo (as I haven't been on in a while and was actually talking about some things to some friends) so I was debating "Do I go get my Pepsi and leave the chatroom or do I stay here but stay thirsty?

I then had this idea.

I just bought a new cell phone and I am sitting in a 3-month "Unlimited Local Talking". Now I thought that it would be cool to be able to call a number and get linked into Ventrilo while you are out. Totally useless in my eyes as no one would ever use it except for this one moment that I wanted to use it. In thinking about that though, I got even more ideas which eventually lead me to develop (or think up) a portable Ventrilo Client.

1) I set up Ventrilo's speakers and microphone to my "Sound Blaster" card. I set my microphone to "What U Hear" so that any noise my computer made, was transmitted on the microphone channel.

2) I opened up Skype (as I have a $3.00 Unlimited Canada-US Calling Plan on it) and set the microphone also to the Sound Blaster's "What U Hear" mode and the speakers to "Sound Blaster" (you can probably see where I'm going with this now).

3) I called my cell phone from Skype. When I spoke into my cell phone, it was sent to Skype, which then in turn sent it to Ventrilo so everyone can hear. Anytime someone talked on Ventrilo, Skype would pick up the noise as my microphone's signal and send it to my cell phone allowing me to hear what was happening in Ventrilo.

Now the only problem that I was faced with was the ability to keep transmitting the signal. Taking off "Push To Talk" and leaving the sensitivity on did not produce any results as the program was canceling out it's own sounds causing the "talk light" to never come on. So I had to use "Push To Talk" in order to transmit.

Pen Cap to the rescue!

So in the end, I got my Pepsi and I was able to speak on Ventrilo and listen the whole way. This is not something I probably will EVER use again but it was one of those "Can I do it?" things.

Your thoughts on this little project I did?

OMFG I love you! Will you marry me?

I've been looking out for a new phone, but I thought there is no point in getting a new phone if I can't talk to all my friends on ventrilo. So I've been looking for a way that I could rig up ventrilo to work through my phone. And you are the only person on the internet that has done it and has proven that it can be done. So now I'm gonna go out and buy a new phone, thanks. <3

This is a good idea. I haven't tried it yet but I am curious about one thing. Since you're using the same sound card, wouldn't it re-transmit when others talk in vent back to vent for all to hear? Essentially you're creating a looped system within the sound card itself. Sound that comes into the system through skype's audio input channel is transmitted to vent over the 'what u hear' channel. Vent's audio output is transmitted back to skype through this same 'what u hear' channel. Since you're using the same 'what u hear' channel and you're always transmitting, any sound you'd normally hear on ventrilo is transmitted on this channel and broadcast to both skype (so you can hear it on your phone) and ventrilo (causing everyone else to hear it as well?). Did you encounter this issue?

    • Microsoft's Copilot Cowork now generally available with usage-based billing by Pradeep Viswanathan Back in March, Microsoft first revealed Copilot Cowork, a new agentic AI experience in Microsoft 365 Copilot through which users can assign tasks to AI to complete in the background. After testing the service with a limited set of customers in Research Preview for a few weeks, Microsoft announced the general availability of Copilot Cowork to customers in the Frontier program on March 30. Today, Microsoft announced the general availability of Copilot Cowork worldwide for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers. The company also highlighted that Cowork became the fastest-growing feature in the history of its Frontier program. Unlike regular Copilot Chat, Copilot Cowork can run complex, long-running, multi-tool tasks from start to finish in the cloud by using organizational context through Work IQ. When compared to Claude Cowork, Microsoft claims that Copilot Cowork will be 30% to 40% cheaper on average with its Microsoft 365 connector. For now, Copilot Cowork runs on Anthropic models, including Opus 4.8 and Sonnet 4.6. However, Frontier customers can now use GPT-5.5. Microsoft also announced Cowork 1, a secure fine-tuned model coming in the next few weeks, which is designed to handle everyday Copilot tasks at a lower cost. To access Copilot Cowork, a Microsoft 365 Copilot user subscription is required. Usage is billed separately through Copilot Credits, based on model use, context retrieval, tool calls, and runtime. Pay-as-you-go pricing is set at $0.01 per Copilot Credit. To offer IT teams full control over usage costs, Microsoft provides spending limits, usage alerts, user-level controls, reporting, and prepaid usage plans for organizations. Usage-based billing begins today. However, Frontier customers who used Cowork between March 30 and June 16 will not be billed until July 1, 2026. The Microsoft 365 Copilot app now includes a toggle to enter the full Cowork experience. Microsoft is also adding partner plugins, with Enosix, Harvey, LSEG, Miro, monday.com, Moody’s, Morningstar, S&P Global Energy, and TeamsMaestro available now. Adobe, Atlassian, Box, Canva, Databricks, and others are coming soon.
