Rumour: First PS3 firmware 2.5 details

Recommended Posts

CVG has learnt that Sony's next firmware update for PlayStation 3 will include an option for screen grabbing, allowing you to take your own shots of what you get up to on your PS3.

A development source has told CVG that PS3 firmware update 2.5 is rumoured to have screen grabbing built in.

Exactly how this would be done and what you could do with the shots once you've grabbed a piece of the action isn't yet known. But you've got to reckon that uploading them to a server and showing off and using the images as themes would be a safe bet.

Sony hasn't announced anything about a 2.5 update yet and won't even discuss the subject. We'll file this one under 'wait and see' for the time being.

I can sort of see this being fun and useful, but does anyone here use the Youtube option in Eden?

Eden is not a good game for it, besides doing level walkthroughs.

Putting Youtube support in a sports game, or something like LittleBigPlanet is where it's at! In fact, even sticking it in an FPS game would be good for capturing online stuff.

MGS4 already lets you do this once get the camera. Nice to see it spreading to a system-level thing.

The next set would be to allow video capture (like Eden does) and upload those :)

my only concern would be that this feature is going to be like costume in-game music.... meaning that the devs have to allow it (aka: wait for a patch)

I'm looking forward to it though

Sony couldn't directly put in-game music into the firmware, that's why it's up to the devs. In-game picture taken is not patented as far as I know...

This.

In-Game music as a universal system is patented by MS, therefore the only way Sony can do it is by telling developers support is there, code it into your games.

I don't think there is in-game picture patents, as no system even has that ability.

Let's hope Sony DON'T file a patent, as to me making patents over these things is absolutely stupid (N)

Intersting feature for about 5 mins I guess. I personally can't really see the point in it but I'm sure some people will be delighted with this addition. I hope 2.5 aint just this though.

But then Microsoft could be a dick and patent it, so Sony would have to take it out of their firmware.

The only thing I can think of that I would like, or is really wanted is access to the Web Browser and maybe Voice Chat, anything else I think is a bit silly.

You don't need to play Movies in game, Looking at Images are a bit silly really, unless say it was some sort of map image, but for such things I would just suggest printing it off. :p

Music is supported but that is up to devs now.

We can message each other in text form, look at trophies etc.

We can change some settings, but I suppose some would like to be able to change resolutions on the fly, but I think that is a bit needless since it chooses the best option for you when you play.

I can't really think of anything else we need now, Life with Playstation is on its way soonish, and for them I would just suggest optimizing the XMB as much as possible so it loads faster.

    • Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat are free to claim on the Epic Games Store by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe PC gamers have two more games they can add to their library without needing to open their wallets, as the Epic Games Store's freebie offer has just refreshed. That means last week's Warhammer 40K Speed Freeks and The Ouroboros King offer has been replaced by two new games, which happen to be Robobeat and Citizen Sleeper copies. From the duo, Robobeat lands from developer Simon Fredholm, offering a rhythm-based action game. Released only last year, the title puts you into the shoes of Ace, a bounty hunter that's targeting the robot showman Frazzer. The fast-paced title offers movement techniques like wall-running, sliding, and bunny hopping to zoom around while shooting enemies, but the requirement is doing everything to the beat. Outside of built-in tracks, the title also lets players upload their own music to populate its levels too. Next, Citizen Sleeper lands from Jump Over The Age, a sci-fi RPG adventure taking place in a ruined space station where thousands of people are trying to survive. The tabletop RPG-inspired title uses things like dice and clocks to change how the player approaches situations and survives their day-to-day lives. There is a large range of characters to meet with in the station, each with their own storylines and alliances. "You are a sleeper, a digitised human consciousness in an artificial body, owned by a corporation that wants you back," says the developer about the setting. "Thrust amongst the unfamiliar and colourful inhabitants of the Eye, you need to build friendships, earn your keep, and navigate the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle." The Citizen Sleeper and Robobeat giveaways are set to run until June 25 on the Epic Games Store, giving PC gamers seven days to claim the latest offer. Once this closes out, new freebies will take its place on the same day. They are supposed to be copies of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 and Voidwrought. Don't forget that mobile gamers can check out the Epic Game Store's weekly giveaways on Android and iOS to grab a freebie there as well.

    • The Online part hasn't even been announced and probably won't be included on day one. This is a massive singleplayer game.
    • While I agree with all that, it just proves there's an a** built for every seat.
