Rumour: First PS3 firmware 2.5 details

Recommended Posts

We already get access to the XMB in game? What other things do you need access to in game?

You can see the XMB but can only interact with about half of it without quitting the game. It would be nice to be able to fire up the web browser and check game wiki's, access mediatomb and see if a file I'm downloading/ripping is available yet, or run the network troubleshooter without having to quit and relaunch the game. If RAM is an issue they could just cache the state of the game to the harddrive and then retrieve it when you're done so that you don't have to go through the title screen again and don't lose any progress from the last save point.

It would also be nice if they used your themed icons in the in-game XMB instead of reverting to the gray ones.

But then Microsoft could be a dick and patent it, so Sony would have to take it out of their firmware.

That's impossible. Print Screen (the PC equivalent of screen capture) has been in PCs since forever. It would be impossible to patent it.

I really hope this rumour is true, but how would they implement the screen grab in game? I mean, what would the command be to take a grab? The best option I can think of without disrupting the game is two quick pushes on the PS button.

You = ftw (Y)

So yes, full XMB please, no crappy prnt scr

This.

In-Game music as a universal system is patented by MS, therefore the only way Sony can do it is by telling developers support is there, code it into your games.

I don't think there is in-game picture patents, as no system even has that ability.

Let's hope Sony DON'T file a patent, as to me making patents over these things is absolutely stupid (N)

Hmm.... I can find prior art to invalidate that patent in about 30 seconds. ;)

I don't mind the print screen but I'd likely not use it. I do agree about the full XMB in game thing though. One thing I'd like to see is a document viewer (doc, rtf, pdf, etc). I know a lot of people are likely against it because they'll just say print it off but if it's large enough, I'm not gonna print it. It'd be nice to display it on my tv rather than on my computer monitor. But hey, that's just me.

Id like to be able to go to the XMB while im playing a PS1 game.

Agreed :/ a screenshot really doesn't matter that much :| Maybe It'll come in useful once or twice but an XMB in a PS1 game should be faster and better than a PS3 game being run, wouldn't use as much RAM so why can't the implement it? Unless there is more to the story, lol.

can't they just make the controllers turn off automatically ...

can't believer that something this important and this simple isn't there yet

That too..

Its so annoying when I pause a game for a few days that when i go back to play it the controller is dead. >_>

+3 With the controller shutting down on its own with inactivity.

+4 Im constantly having to turn them off with little girls about and using the Bluray remote instead as they forget to turn them off.

can't they just make the controllers turn off automatically ...

Isn't that already there? My controller has turned itself off a few times before when left alone for a short while. It isn't low on charge, BTW! :D

Yeah I really need my controllers to turn off.

I watch a lot of media through my PS3, and I NEVER remember to manually turn it off ending up with me charging my controller every few days.

I have no idea why something I suspect is fairly simple to manage, hasn't been implemented or even highly requested? I don't see much complaining about it...

    • Given only Volume license customers and specific resellers can obtain the LTSC versions legitimately it seems likely that this has been tinkered with quite a lot!
    • Apple CEO Tim Cook confirms looming price hikes due to memory shortages by Hamid Ganji Image via Apple Memory and chip shortages have led to significant price increases for electronics over the past year, and it seems that more hikes are on the way for upcoming smartphones and computers. Apple CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the company is planning to increase the prices of some of its products due to the ongoing memory and storage shortages. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Cook confirmed the looming price hikes for Apple’s future products, adding that “Unfortunately, price increases are unavoidable.” He also said the company is doing its best to “mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable.” The Apple CEO also noted that the allocation of a large portion of memory chips to AI companies has contributed to shortages in the market, resulting in lower supply at a time when demand for devices remains high. “We definitely need memory pricing and supply to return to reasonable levels for consumer products. That’s the bottom line,” Cook said. Cook also added that Apple is ready to use its vast cash reserves to help boost supply in the market because additional production capacity is needed. While he declined to specify how Apple plans to do that, he said the company will not build its own memory and storage factories despite its financial resources and silicon expertise. Cook did not provide further details on the scale of the price increases or which Apple products would be affected, though iPads and Macs could see higher prices sooner than other products. Apple’s next product launch event is scheduled for September, when the company is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its first foldable iPhone. It remains unclear whether the upcoming iPhones will be affected by the price increases, but given the current memory shortage, higher prices seem increasingly likely. There is currently no clear timeline for the end of the memory shortage. Samsung, one of the world’s three largest memory chip manufacturers, recently said the shortage could persist for several more years.
    • Downloads does not equal actual usage, even less when the app is pre-installed in some Galaxy phones.
    • +1000 to this, don't understand why they added that margin around the top bar, even the close button is a PITA to click without aiming. Ofc, this is just preview and hopefully they will revert such odd UX decision before hitting final version.
    • so the people who bought this will get a refund?
