I have yet to search through all the .dll files for various system files on my computer but in the meantime maybe I can get an answer from someone that knows already. I've completely converted almost every icon in my system with newer "Vista" style Icons (Of course) but there's just two places left that show me XP style buttons and I donut like it. I've provided a screen shot for you to see what I am talking aboot.

Any Idea??

the old version is in comctl32.dll in system32 folder. (bitmap)

the new versions are also in comctl32.dll, but here: WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls_*********_*****_x-ww_*******

there are more of them, so change the bitmap in all comctl32.dll

Okay I looked through each of those but where is the one for the standar non-xp (windows 3.1 looking) buttons. The one I stated you get when you Save a file from within Internext Explorer.

Do I have to change all of these comctl32.dll files? There are 4 of them in the WinSxS directory as well as the one in system32?

It can change with those bitmaps you say...but, in my xp i only have two diferent files, explorer.exe and shell32.dll, and as you can see, mine looks like this:

I have made a .rar with the files mentioned in case you want them, the best way to replace the original ones is with a live cd, or else you may have to repeat the process several times...

Don?t forget \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE folder, put a copy of them both inside that folder.

Thank you... I do have my own modified Explorer.exe and shell32.dll file. The file I need an updated version of is the comctl32.dll file.

I just do not know how to change the button themselves even though I can get into the file. Hmm...

the standard non-xp (windows 3.1 looking) buttons are in comctl32.dll in system32 folder.open the dll with reshacker and see bitmap section. (bitmap 124, 125 +130 and 131) edit / replace the bitmaps then replace the dll file. (with replacer)

the xp looking buttons are in comctl32.dll in WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls as i said before. also bitmap section. (bitmap 124 for small, bitmap 125 for large buttons + bitmap 130 and bitmap 131)

the whole dialog is in the comdlg32.dll, dialog 1547 and 1552.

the best if you reshack all instances of the comctl32.dll in winsxs folders.

Okay cool... so... know of any updated versions of this with Vista Style buttons anywhere? Or how do I create my own bmp's for this?

i don't know about vista style buttons, but it is easy to replace.

Okay well here you have it... I went to replace the bmp's in those files and after I rebooted my computer would just hang in the "Windows Is Starting Up..." Screen. : (

Nothing I could do AT ALL would restore it so after the last 3 hours (since 9:30 this evening) I've just spent re-installing everything. Jesus.

Luckily I have it all saved including my customizations so I'm pretty much back to where I started.

Unfortuantely, I am just going to have to deal with those buttons looking the way they do. Oh well. I really think I need to upgrade to Vista and just be happy with it. I just really wish I could have done it.

and because of this you have reinstalled windows? why? because there are some solutions to restore the original files.

1. boot from xp cd, restore / repair from console

2. another xp (or another OS) on another partition. (then copying the original files.)

3. using something bootable live OS cd (linux or whatever, then copying the original files)

4. put hdd to another computer (then copying the original files)

I know I know. Dude, I did everything I possibly could. I'm VERY savvy with that kind of knowledge in the event that something like this happens and I absolutely had no choice. I unfortunately did not create another partition on my computer, I only have a laptop with 80 GB of space and one Hard Drive. It's not too old of a laptop but old enough. I guess technically I could create another partition and install and second copy of XP and just keep XP on it, but... do you recommend that?

Doesn't bother me so much other than I have to re-rip all my Music back onto the computer which consists of over 500+ CD's. : (

That is why I am going to invest in an External Hard Drive. But in the meantime, hmm... wondering if I should create a 2nd partition?

I still wish I could convert those buttons though. I wonder if that even was the problem?

ok, no problem. just was a bit surprised. :)

well. sometimes reshacker causes problems in the dll. sometimes the hacked file gets corrupted. (i think the problem is with the file "header" or the old size_of_img and the new reshacked size_of_image. reshacker sometimes just don't update the new, altered size_of_image value in the dll header)

btw, alternatives to resource hacker:

- xn resource editor

- resedit.

both are freeware, google for it. :)

you could try something live cd or create another partition for another xp. it's your choice.

i have 2 xp's on 2 partitions. one is for default (using it right now, and it's reshacked) and the another is for test-hacking and trying programs, etc.. :)

Interesting... I did not know that. I will have to first see if I can just install a second copy of XP like you and use it for testing just to see. That would be cool. Great idea.

As for those other Resource Hackers I will try them out. Of the two, XN and ResEdit... do you prefer one more than the others?

    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!

    • Server Summit had a heap of announcements, ADCS changes are baller.
    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
