The same thing happens to me. I am also ising vista x64. why is it so?

For me on Vista x64 it's problem-free, and the sidebar shows up fine. But on one XP and one Server 2003 systems, it acts funny and have some weird problems. On another XP system it's again problem-free, seems there may be certain system configurations that can cause strange problems for this beta release.

For example on one XP installation, the Smarter Address Bar refuses to search keywords through the whole URL and titles for history (AwesomeBar-style), only the traditional auto-complete, ie. entering "msdn" only shows "www.msdn.com", but not "blogs.msdn.com". And it searches through the titles for the Favorites, but not the URL. Also the View Source still opens up the source in Notepad, not the new HTML viewer/editor. :/

MS have to pick you to submit bugs.

It's a fairly silly way to go about it.

I guess they are only shooting themselves in the foot.

But I bet they troll forums such as this to get feedback too.

If Microsoft do that, they should donate money to Neowin for using this resource. (Y)

There's still plenty of features Microsoft is behind on. I'd really like the ability to save your previous session automatically on exit (a prompt, for example, like Firefox 3), spell checking (how have they not added this yet?!), password management, etc.

I also don't like the change they made to the toolbar in Beta 2. I liked the look of it before -- now it looks like a Windows Basic theme. Minor gripe, I know.

(I'm aware of IE Pro, but it just doesn't seem finished to me or as polished as a browser developer would make it.)

Edit: I just noticed that clearing the private data now doesn't clear the drop down history in the address bar. Odd. Deleting misspelled sites doesn't work for me in the address bar, either.

It seems the installer is actually faulty or something, that it can result in the browser displaying some very strange and seemingly random problems under different circumstances.

guess someone should report the installer as the biggest bug to Microsoft.

Mozilla, Safari and Opera all have open bug reporting software, they aren't being filled with crap.

MS picking and choosing stops what little morons there may be, and it also stops valid reports coming through (Might explain why Beta 2 still has bugs that people were pointing out in Beta 1)

Edit: Silly me, IE8 still has bugs from IE6, why should I expect them to be fixed between betas.

well, Mozilla and Safari have very open bug reporting systems, that's sure, but for Opera... despite I'm a big fan of the browser, I have to say I really hope it can have a public visible bug reporting system. Most of the time I don't know whether the bug I'm reporting is a duplicate of others, or if they have actually read my bug report at all.

For Microsoft, they did recommend non Beta testers to report bugs in the public internet explorer beta newsgroup, for what it's worth.

When I highlight something I get a weird little box with a menu. One of the options is "Define with Encarta"

I think he's talking about a built-in dictionary, not an online service shortcut. But then personally I don't see much need for a built-in dictionary, besides it's not like any browser have a built-in Chinese dictionary anytime soon :p

IE8 b2 already does that.

I think it is fair to say IE 8 Beta 2 is most probably the biggest un-reliable piece of **** i have come across so far, almost as crap as chrome (pffft) - Some features i will admit are not bad, however, opening IE to find it closing to send an error report and web pages unable to login to particular sites / displaying of sites even in compatability mode not working just shows how far IE needs to come, regardless of beta or not it wasnt worth releasing to the public, maybe beta testers in the MS community.

I've had a go at the browser and I like it a lot. But until IE loses the clicky sound everytime I click a link then I just can't take it on full time. I know I can disable it by turning off the navigation sound via control panel, but the thing is I want the clicky sound when I'm using Windows Explorer, I just don't want it when browsing the web. Surely it irritates MS staff...surely.

Does anybody else think they have made the tabs look ugly in IE8 compared to IE7?

Yeah, they don't seem to look quite as good (although I do like the color grouping feature). Its just the shape or something I can't put my finger on. They aren't Firefox-tabs ugly, but they do look slightly worse than IE7's sleek looking tabs. Its only a minor complaint, though. ^_^

It now looks like the same product, not a separate dashboard. Pairing is one tap and zero typing: the generated WebUI password is now copyable, and the QR code carries the credentials — scanning it from your phone logs straight in (no typing the IP or password), then drops the credentials from the address bar. Search Two new providers: RuTor (CIS sources, no login, via a public TorAPI relay) and Torrents-CSV. Results are sorted by seeders (healthiest first), and each search now times out after 15 s so one dead provider can't hang the UI. Files & trackers Per-file priority is back: right-click a file in the detail panel to set Skip / Low / Normal / High. Rename an individual file inside a torrent (double-click or the file menu), separate from renaming the torrent. Remove a tracker from a torrent (the ✕ on a tracker row); adding was already there. Smart Paste on Ctrl+V — paste a magnet, a 40-char info-hash, or a .torrent URL straight from the clipboard and it's added immediately (text fields still paste text normally). Covers & titles Anime fansub naming ([Group] Title - NN) now resolves to the right show. Audio channel layouts in titles (DDP5.1, 7.1, …) are stripped so they don't pollute cover matching. Under the hood The legacy QWidget interface is gone. QML had been the only UI since 3.0.0 (reachable old code lived behind a hidden --legacy flag); with parity confirmed, the entire QWidget layer — main window, every dialog, the theme manager — was removed (~13,400 lines). The four restored actions above were features that backend already supported but the QML port had never wired. macOS: the WebUI password hash moved out of the keychain into app settings, so launching the app no longer pops a login-keychain password prompt on unsigned builds. The actual password still lives in the keychain. Cleanup: ~400 orphaned translation strings and a batch of dead code removed; internal duplication collapsed; an ARCHITECTURE.md added for contributors. Unit / security / memory tests and the ASan/UBSan/TSan sanitizers stay green.
