Sound via a ATi 4850 over HDMI

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so I read somewhere that the ATi HD Cards all support HDMI via an adapter similar to those used for DVI-VGA. I also read that doing this also allows for sound to travel via HDMI.

Anyone have any ideas on this? My PC will primarily be hooked up to my HDTV and obviously this'd save a audio cable if it were possible. I wish I could find the original review to double check, but I cant.

Thanks guys

Look what I found,

Anyone have any experience with doing this? From what I understand the Graphics Card has its OWN Audio Processor instead of just forwarding the audio from the Internal Audio. Doubt it's any worse then the built in SoundCard on my motherboard.

Go to Realtek, grab download the "ATI HDMI Audio Device" Driver and install it.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downlo...p;GetDown=false

Connect the HDMI Cable

Next right click on the volume icon in the system tray (by the time) and choose 'Playback Devices'.

Then right click on Realtek HDMI Output (ATi HDMI Audio), and select 'Set as Default Device'.

Voila, sound over HDMI!

Note: My 'Set as Default Device' is grayed out since I don't have HDMI Connected at the moment, it will become available once you connect the card to a HDMI source.

Audio will not transfer from the DVI port. To transfer audio and video in the same cable you must use a HDMI to HDMI connection.

Does your graphics card have a HDMI port?

no my vid.card is 4850 and it has 2 dvi ports.. dvi side of the cable goes from the card and hdmi side in the lcd...i 've connected it to the lcd and been watching 1080p movies and stuff but the sound comes from my computer speakers :) can i make it come out from the tv?

If there is no HDMI port and it indeed can transfer audio over HDMI, it probably has a non-standard DVI port and requires a special DVI-HDMI adapter.

Actually dvi ports are capable of sound its just that most companies didnt do it because computers didnt need to but now that lcd screens are more common the 4xxx series and up can do it via an regular dvi-hdmi adapter.

"DVI to HDMIUnlike HDMI, DVI usually carries no audio data in its TMDS channel. However, as DVI is for the most part compatible with HDMI (see Compatibility with DVI), it is just as possible to support including audio data by incorporating the audio in the TMDS signal. Because DVI displays typically have no sound capabilities, a DVI to HDMI adapter/cable can then be used to connect the device to an HDMI display. For instance, this feature allows PCs to send audiovisual data to a high definition television. It is increasingly found on modern computer graphics cards (e.g. cards by Nvidia[1] and ATI[2]) and certain motherboards with integrated graphics."

Hmm Some dvi to hdmi connectors dont allow the audio. IM guessing due to not having all the required pins .So if you still have the dv to hdmi adapter that came with your card then you should be set.

IF not this one should work .

sorry had wrong link.

You need an Official ATI HD Radion DVI to HDMI adaptor, these will carry sound from the graphics card over HDMI.

Most DVI to HDMI adaptors will not carry sound, however the official ATI ones too.

I?m using one of these on my media centre pc: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Original-ATI-HD-Rade...=item4ceba0252b

After you have an ATI DVI to HDMI adaptor just do what tkyoshi says in the above post and you will get audio and video over HDM:):)

Any drivers for sound are included with the Catalyst drivers.

you do not need any cables to connect to the graphics card from the inside of the computer apart from the power cable. on ATI cards the DVI-HDMI port is sometimes a different color. on my 4850 the port is colored yellow. all you need is the special DVI-HDMI adapter and a HDMI lead, plug them in and then into the TV/LCD monitor and enable the HDMI audio output on windows. the Catalyst drivers come with the Audio drivers included. install them and you are ready to go.

im confused - there's a DVI-to-HDMI adapter... ok but that wont transmit sound. DVI wont transmit sound at all...

if you have an HDMI plug on the card, then that'll pass audio to a tv (for example) when the option is selected in the driver (or during the install like i do)

Yes it will transmit sound, i use it alot. the DVI port on the sound card is modified to transmit sound on the newer cards, and the adapters are able to pick the sound up and push it through the HDMI cable to the Monitor /TV.

    • It sounds like you’re trying to rewrite a narrative to align this layoff with your political beliefs. Games can be horrible, whatever backwards notions you have don’t change that bungie has problems, mostly with just bad games, and arrogance. When they pushed Microsoft to let them be independent they lost their way. They hired on a bunch of people and they couldn’t justify the employee count consistent with their revenue.
