A question about PSUs...Try not to laugh.

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at getting a PSU, and the slot sits at the top of my tower..Now I'm seeing a lot of power supplies with the fan at the top of them, as opposed to the back...Why is that? Are those only for cases that have vents on the top of them or will it work with my current case? I'm under the impression that I need a PSU that has the fan on the back of it, not the top.

I was looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817139004

I may have to settle for: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList....amp;Order=PRICE

(Although both seem to be great PSUs.)

the fan is actually on the bottom, showing a picture with a fan hidden is rather pointless :p

just to confirm it tho, have a look on your current PSU and see if the the 2 screws holding the PSU in that are the furthest apart are on the bottom, if they are, the fan will be on the bottom

I think they are pictured upside down, to show you the fan :)

(Hopefully more people will confirm that)

Hopefully they don't, otherwise I'll feel like a total idiot >_>. Seriously, this would be the dumbest question I've ever asked if that is the case....:(.

Yeah...The picture was upside down...I just looked at my PSU and it makes sense seeing as how it's on the bottom of mine.

So uhh..Let's never speak of this again. Ever.

There are no stupid questions. ;)

If you look at the picture with the screw holes, you'll see that they aren't symmetrical. Ideally/usually the PSU goes with the fan at the back, or if it has a fan at the bottom, the fan opening will/should be away from the top of the case, so the airflow doesn't get obstructed. All logical so far.

The way you screw the PSU into your case depends on the case. Some cases have the screw holes directly in them and then there is only one way to put the PSU in it. Other cases have something like a faceplate. You screw the PSU into that metal plate, which in turn gets then screwed to the case. This is to allow to turn the PSU which ever way you want and built it into the case, regardless of its position.

I didn't know that about the ones with the metal plate. Thanks Odom :).

Vegetunks- I've seen that on some newer cases. A new case is something I'm thinking of investing in someday soon myself.

Well, I recommend the Coolermaster Cosmos, really good case, some good video reviews on YouTube. Only Downside, it's like 20KG when full.

But everything else is amazing on it. Sound Proofing FTW

    • they couldnt do W11 LTSC so the support lasts longer....
    • The fact that the pref is not enabled by default tells you that what you see is what you get...for now. Hopefully the final version will have all the quirks ironed out.
