Is that measly 40GB hard drive keeping you from downloading all your favorite movies and games from the PlayStation Store? Here are five easy to follow steps to supercharge your PS3 to a whopping 500 gigs for all your downloading pleasures. Watch the video walkthrough to see how it's done.

Step #1:

Purchase the Samsung M6 500GB hard drive (widely available online for around $230). Important note: The M6 is the only 500GB internal hard drive that will fit into the PS3. Use the PS3's Backup function to transfer saves and other content to a USB drive.

Step #2:

Unplug the PS3 and ground yourself. Open the PS3's hard drive access port, located on the side of the unit, with your fingernail.

Step #3:

Carefully unscrew the blue screw using the correct screwdriver bit (Philips Precise) using gentle pressure, taking care not to strip the screw. Pull out the metal hinge, and slide the hard drive tray out.

Step #4:

Unscrew the four screws that attach the hard drive to the metal tray, and remove the old hard drive (place old drive in anti-static bag).

Step #5:

Attach the new Samsung 500GB hard drive to the tray, replacing the four screws from the previous step. Slide the hard drive tray back into the PS3 port, and snap the metal hinge back into place, then replace the blue screw. Close the access port, power up your PS3, and replace the date stored on your USB drive. Voila -- you're done! Enjoy your massive storage space.

First time 500GB has been attempted, good news, but ouch at the price for the drive!

How is this different from any other HDD installation?

It's not, but the Samsung M6 is the only 500GB drive that'll work for now supposedly.

Important note: The M6 is the only 500GB internal hard drive that will fit into the PS3
It is news worthy. Up till now, anything over 320GB (I believe) wouldn't work.

Have there been any 2.5" over 320GB at this point? This is the worlds first 2.5" 500GB.

As I said, Samsung creating the disc is impressive, a 2.5" fitting in the 2.5" slot of the PS3 is not, it's stating the obvious. I don't mind the word spreading on this HDD either, just hate how the article is written. Like they have some sorta' secret on how to unlock 500GB on the PS3 or tells us something nobody knew.

It has nothing to do with this being the first HDD at that size. You do realise that the bigger capacity HDD's physically won't fit in the PS3, right?

If you are telling me other 2.5" won't fit the 2.5" slot of the PS3, then I am willing to say sorry and correct my mistake.

If you are telling me 3.5" drives won't fit the 2.5" slot, you are stating the incredibly obvious.

It's not

The first 500GB units that fit in the notebook industry standard 9.5mm height dimension are expected to hit the market next month and are produced by Samsung.

Hitachi also recently introduced the 500GB 2.5″ HDDs with a 12.5mm height.

The MHZ2 BT hard drives have a height of 12.5mm, which is not a standard dimension for 2.5-inch laptop hard drives.

Others exist, only the Samsung is 9.5mm but.

Yup, others exist, but none have fitted till now.

That is exactly what I'm saying. I'm sure AB already knows you're sorry though.

Okay, this is the kinda news you'd expect to read in such an article. Hence why I think it's a crap article.

As I said above, my comments weren't targeted at you AB, I just hate these sensational articles with no information and stating something which on the surface, has been covered a million times. Had they actually said anything about the Hitachi drives and their physical hight 'problems' I could see the point of the article. But as it stands now, it's just an article on how to fit a 2.5" HDD which is even covered by the PS3 manual.

So I'm sorry to have thread crapped.

It's fine :) but I did point out in post 3 that it was the only 500GB drive to fit the PS3, the article says that itself - I took a direct quote from it, therefore the article does explain the uniqueness of the Samsung M6 to the PS3

I guess had you known other 2.5" 500GB drives are out and have been for a while, you'd of clicked.

Anyway, back on topic, is anyone going to grab a 500GB? I still think the price is too high for now, in comparison to what a 320GB will cost you (either plenty of space for your PS3).

I just searched for the Samsung M6 and everywhere it was being called "The worlds first 500GB 2.5", So I just assumed you guys were talking about ordinary HDD's or something else. :)

But as for my self, still using the 60GB and It's barely 20% full at this point. I'll probably wait a year or so before I consider upgrading, by then a 500GB should be at an affordable level.

Stay away from Pixmania!

They've been reported and features on television around here a number of times. Horrible service, extremely late delivery, broken goods and even not delivering at all even though they withdrew the money.

So unless they changed the last months, save yourself the trouble.

    • Cheap labour, the same as the U.K. China pays their people pittance.
    • Those people that come over here on boats are already in a safe country, if they want to come over here then do so correctly though the right channels. I was born in the U.K, my family that came over here came so via the proper means. My partner came here via the correct channels, she also became a British citizen, she knows more about this country than most of them that was born here, including myself, she worked hard to do what she does. She will stick up for this country and have done a few times, when people from her own part of world have put the U.K down. We are not going to agree, all I said to start with is that maybe Trump has the right idea with this America first thing and maybe we should start doing the same. Maybe not as drastic as what he is doing, but we do need to sort this country out, we need to sort out tech instead of relying on the U.S and others. Again you have not shown why you are so annoyed that we have left the E.U and this is what it is all about? If you don't live in the U.K and live in the E.U are you annoyed that we left your little club? If you live in the U.K and is pro-E.U, then fair enough then I can see how it annoys you. Are you one of these people who lives in the U.K and have a holiday chalet in the E.U and can now only stay there for so long? If so, then that is bad luck. As I have posted before, I have no problem with people coming here to work, as long as they do if via the proper channels. We are out of the E.U, people voted out, and maybe if more people had voted instead of sitting on their backsides the results would have been different. But they like the E.U and our government thought no we would not vote to leave. How wrong they were, surprised me. I expected to wake up in the morning and hear on the radio that we voted to stay. As I said, we are out and have been for 10 years, we are not going to go back in anytime soon if we ever do, so we all need to make the best of how things are. Anyway, this is supposed to be a tech site.
    • Tim Cook: "The US over time began to stop having as many vocational kinds of skills." What's the point of wasting time getting those skills if you can't get a job with them? Good Lord, maybe he and his cohort of CEO's who exported all these jobs to China should just shut the f**k up :D
    • I made a new Cinematic/Trailer for the game, this will be the intro, still a work in progress!  I also updated the Steam page with a ton of new screenshots! 👀 https://store.steampowered.com/app/3925340/Incoherence_Dark_Rooms/
