101 MB Memory Free in Vista

Recommended Posts

My laptop has 1.5 GB of Memory. I just got an error from AVG saying that there wasn't enough memory available to do updates. I opened up task manager to check what was going on, and it turns out that I only have 101 MB of memory free. I only have Firefox (with 2 tabs open) and Outlook (just checking for mail) running.

Odd, 1.5GB should be enough. Try upgrading to Firefox 3 which uses less memory. Can you give us a screenshot of your processes tab on task manager?

I have Firefox 3 already. Here is my processes tab (BTW - This really isn't a Tablet PC, but I have a graphics tablet that I plug into my laptop from time to time)...

BTW - Now it is down to 13 MB

People need to learn, Free Memory is bad, it's only slowing down your system.

Here is an example of a good memory setup on my Mac

I'm not trying to start a flame war i'm just saying Windows Memory Management is bad.

As for the AVG Memory error, it's a known bug, restarting the computer fixes it

Vista uses free memory to make programs start faster. As vegetrunks said that is a bug in AVG. even though the memory is "used" the cache will be instantly purged when a program needs it.

It is normal for all the memory to be "used" as it makes the system more responsive.

Not really, My Vista has only 35MB out of 4GB free, which follows the "Free memory is wasted memory" philosophy, thus your point is moot.

I am known to be a Vista hater huh? Oh so thats why I own seven copies of it yeah?

All the Machines in my house used to be Vista but I moved them over to Ubuntu, so that makes me a Vista hater how?

Nobody cares if you moved your computers to Ubuntu, but your incesant bashing here @ Neowin,Objectiveley and subjectively is way sick,so please just swallow your damn opinions they are useless.

Well, certainly something here is useless. Look, it's not your (or my) place to tell someone he or she should not post. Everyone is entitled to his opinion. If you feel a poster is biased then fine, just say so. But you can do it without being rude and nasty to that person. And if you feel someone's posts should not be permitted you should contact one of the staff members and let them deal with it.

And Vegetunks - if indeed you've switched all of your systems away from Vista that would seem to indicate a dislike for the product, don't you think? ;)

Honestly this is Windows Vista support, you probably shouldn't be saying crap like this here. So, even though Vista has Superfetch, you still say the memory management is bad?
