Backup Software

Question

Hey,

In the process of trialling different backup software, it's either down to the Veritas line or EMC Retrospect.

Is it true that Retrospect has or will be getting canned from the EMC line up?

Article from early 2007

I've been trialling it and I actually rather like it (Retrospect), it's been working well for the past month or so. However, if it is getting canned then I don't want to be investing in it now.. I only found this one article on it though, don't really want to base my choice on that alone.

Cheers.

I am not sure what type of application you are using this for: Server [2003 ?] + Client: I have used Veritas but do not know much about EMC Retrospect.

Have you had a look at: cwrsync - Rsync for Windows. cwRsync is a packaging of Rsync and Cygwin. You can use cwRsync for fast remote file backup and synchronization.

Rsync uses the Rsync algorithm which provides a very fast method for bringing remote files into sync. It does this by sending just the differences in the files across the link, without requiring that both sets of files are present at one of the ends of the link beforehand. At first glance this may seem impossible because the calculation of diffs between two files normally requires local access to both files.

Rsync normally uses ssh for communication. It requires no special privileges for installation. You must, however, have a working ssh system.

Alternatively, rsync can run in `daemon' mode, listening on a socket. This is generally used for public file distribution, although authentication and access control are available. Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows. It consists of a DLL (cygwin1.dll), which emulates substantial Linux API functionality, and a collection of tools.

Here is a link to the website if you are interested! Cheers!

Hey,

Yeah there's about 6-7 2003 servers, a couple of SQL servers, and around 15 or so clients, so it's nothing _that_ big or anything like that.

I'll have a look into that to see if it suits our needs, thanks.

So it's not common news about EMC Retrospect? Anyone
