OK well maybe it does and maybe it doesn't. I don't really care. But what with their crazy EULA for using it (which basically amounts to 'if you use CHROME, then Google will own your soul) and the fact that they are abusing (well OK that's possibly debatable too) their market position by placing the CHROME download link front and centre on the main Google page, I won't be in a hurry to ditch FF and all my cool extensions any time soon.

But I would like my old Google back. (You know the one that says that it won't do evil?)

With that in mind, is there any way of getting rid of the download link on the main Google page so I can have the old default simple Google page back again?

I just feel like my face is being shoved in it every time I see it.

I tried adblock-plus, but that didn't work.

When google toolbar just came out, they put a link too dude. Nothing wrong with that, it's their own product.

you are not the only one whos whining about adblock plus, in fact the whole internet is whining about that.

but think logically, Google only has two options to enable Adblock Plus:

Google can port one from Firefox, but it will get tons of lawsuits for disabling ADs.

Google can open up 3rd party plugins, but that will significantly affect its stability.

You should go read google's comic about Chrome. This browser is not designed to be a regular web browsing browser, its more of App oriented. Thus its javascript performance is friggen scary. firefox also claims that they are not worried about Chrome. They are not rivals, they take different battlefields.

If you're familiar with Ad Muncher, it works with Chrome and everything else. http://www.admuncher.com/

yes and so does Privoxy (www.privoxy.org). It blocks almost everything out of the box and it's free and released under GNU GPL licence.

Also for paranoid ones there is always Chromium which is basically the same thing as Chrome but without Google branding and released under BSD licence ...

    • I gave up on browser ad-blocking extensions a few years ago, replaced them with Adguard. Not perfect but overhaul is a nice app that does the job on both Windows and Android with the respective versions.

    • "Of course the easiest solution is to switch to uBlock Origin Lite if you want to remain on Chrome, as it is MV3-based, but from our experience, uBO Lite does not seem to be as good as the original non-Lite version" In my experience uBlock Origin Lite does the job for normal everday home users. When they kill that we get to watch Firefox and Brave get a boost in user market share.
    • Block by DNS ad blocker! I dare you! I will even layer unlock Origin, on top of my internal DNS, if I need to and I don’t even block ads today (I really should but this type of behavior makes me angry). I suppose I could also just be lazy, and add the flags myself, back to each release (it wouldn’t be that difficult).
    • Wonder what MPs have ties to these privacy/verification/data harvesting companies that are going to step in this time. Last time under the Tories half the cabinet had fingers in the pies, heck even the PM and his wife at the time was working for silicon valley, probably made a fortune.
