What to do with extra RAM

Recommended Posts

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to 4GB of RAM last night, and I'm wondering what I should do with the original RAM. I would like to sell it, but I have a question before I do. If my laptop were to have some problem and I took it into an Apple store for service, would they want the original RAM put back in to rule out hardware issues? Last time I was in there I overheard a Genius telling a customer that in order to get his laptop repaired, he would have to put his original hard drive back in. Any thoughts?

MasterC - Precisely what I am wondering myself. :)

From day 1, I upgraded my 1gb ram to 4 on my iMac and have kept the Memory in my storage unit behind lock and key just in case. I figure, better safe than sorry. I have a 3 year apple care on it as well, so might end up "storing" it for a long time if anything should happen and Cara or someone else on here confirms that it might be needed in case of system repair.

i'll tell you my little story about keeping your RAM.

My imac came with 1GB of RAM and later on i upgraded to 4GB, works wonderful, But......

i was fooling around with installing and uninstalling software and then decided to reinstall Leopard, the installation would start but about 30% of progress an error message would pop up saying "could not validate the "Essentials package" or something like that, tried and retried around five times and nothing, upon some research online, it turns out it was the RAM, my Precious iMac is so spoiled that would not accept the OS without its Original RAM.

and where was my Original 1GB of RAM? oh yes i installed it in my Fiancee's laptop :pinch:

So there i was, bringing back my girl's laptop to take it apart LOL and put the thing back on the iMac so i could reinstall Leopard.

and guess what? It Worked!

So this may or may not happen to you, but this is my story and how i learned that i should definitively keep the Original RAM close LOL

I have since reinstalled OS X and didn't have any issues. So it might have been the maker or quality. Hard to say. I know that I think I ended up using the same maker which was Crucial brand for mine. So, that may have played a role in it.
