Bill Gates in a commercial? The commercial we were talking about is with Jerry Seinfeld

There's one with Bill Gates in a shoe store with Seinfeld.

OT: The whole point of the ad is an attempt to humanise Microsoft... if you noticed at the end, there's no text, just the Windows logo, kinda like an Apple ad. People then just associate the Windows logo with feelings, and this ad is a nice comfortable feel-good scene, so you identify those feelings with the Windows logo. Note, this ad is not targeted at uber leet computer nerds, but the other 95% of PC users. They're probably in it for the long run, trying to shift the feelings people have traditionally associated with Microsoft.

The point of this marketing is NOT to push Microsoft as selling computers or Vista, so stop mentioning that.

Just wait a while for the ads to filter into the minds of the general public and get them used to seeing happy simple life, coupled with the Microsoft logo... and then BAM :o you got comfortable feelings while using Windows  Nowadays it's "think comfortable, think being at ease, think Microsoft" - and yes, this sort of marketing DOES work.

confusing yes

kinda funny yes to that

selling vista.. spending 300 million dollars this ..... NO

This is supposed to be a precursor to the actual ad so maybe we will see better or I can say right now

"The ad that killed Vista and the same time implying it was delicious"

- instead If they are really going that route hire the cookie monster and put vista brand all over him

I didn't realise Microsoft's core audience were Seinfeld fans, nor did I know Microsoft were so low budget.

Where do you get low budget from? I don't think they're trying to make the ads look like they cost a fortune to make (albeit they are spending $300 million on the campaign)... I just don't see where you get low budget from though.

How much does it cost to film the PC vs. Mac ads?

I guess for $300,000,000 I was expecting something better.

@ MMaster23

I don't know about that, many users only use Windows because it runs their favorite software.

My contention is that most users on Neowin are not fanboys (either way), but know what's funny and what is a confusing / poor attempt at advertising. Advertising something that isn't clear.

If they are advertising Windows then what has Bill Gates at a shoe store buying expensive uncomfortable shoes got to do with selling Windows?!

Step two in the Vista Hater's Handbook: put your opinions in "everyone"'s mouth.

This is an extended $300M ad campaign featuring Jerry Seinfeld. His show was popular and was about... wait for it.... NOTHING. Of course they're going to start the campaign out that way...

well, seeing all the buzz about this commercial, it seems like it did the job just right.

They didnt put a single thing, person, company down. They didnt take low blows at anything. Hell, they didnt even show how their product would be better or worse, its just a commercial humanizing microsoft.

Really, its a good commercial. I watch it , i have no discontent feelings, and when it ends, i dont find myself hating anything. Sort of the NIKE approach. You dont have to show off ur product when half the world already knows about it and uses it.

It showed Gates in a good light, it showed Jerry being sort of "star struck" , and had just a great feeling though through out the whole thing.

For all those who hated it, what were u expecting?? something along the lines of jerry going, "Apple? whats with that? its not an apple, u cant eat it. It doesnt taste good...... " . seriously though, what where u expecting?? If you really didnt have any expectations, then what went wrong?

I was expecting Microsoft to premote vista so everyone doesn't think it SUCKS!.

Have you ever noticed that everyone talks about that everyone thinks that vista sucks?

...

Have you ever noticed that some people complain about another's generalized use of the term "everyone" while also generalizing by using the term "everyone" in their comparison?

    • Qualcomm's new Snapdragon Reality Elite chip brings on-device AI to Android XR devices by Pradeep Viswanathan Qualcomm has been delivering dedicated SoCs for mixed reality and spatial computing devices for several years. The journey started with the Snapdragon XR1, followed by the Snapdragon XR2 in 2019, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 in September 2023, and finally the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 in 2024. Today, Qualcomm announced a major upgrade with the new Snapdragon Reality Elite Platform, which targets premium mixed reality and spatial computing devices. OEMs can use this SoC to power both all-in-one video-see-through headsets and lightweight, tethered optical-see-through glasses. Qualcomm highlighted that the Snapdragon Reality Elite will power the next wave of Android XR devices coming later this year. These wearables will offer better visuals, improved power efficiency, and deeper on-device AI integration compared to the previous generation. The Snapdragon Reality Elite can deliver up to 48 TOPS of AI performance, allowing large language models and large vision models to run directly on the device for the first time. In addition to enabling new spatial AI experiences, these new AI capabilities will improve head and hand tracking, as well as see-through features. On the performance side, the Snapdragon Reality Elite offers up to 60% higher GPU performance, up to 30% higher CPU performance, and up to 160% higher NPU performance compared to the previous generation. The platform supports visuals of up to 4.4K per eye at 90 frames per second for sharper images and smoother motion. Qualcomm is also claiming significant efficiency improvements. The Snapdragon Reality Elite can offer up to 20% longer battery life under the same workload. More importantly, the chipset can run up to 12 degrees Celsius cooler under load, making headsets more comfortable for users to wear for longer periods. The platform also includes improvements to video see-through, featuring lower latency and better image quality. Qualcomm states that its EVA hardware block helps accelerate demanding computer vision workloads, improving how digital content blends with the real world.
    • Umm... GitHub continues to use AWS. That's the story, that's the headline. There's no "new" news here. GitHub continues to require additional capacity beyond the originally-planned Azure allocations. There's nothing special about this; nothing noteworthy. They're still using AWS' infra until the cutover is complete.

    • "just $100 per TB"? Just? Are we trying to make this seem like the new normal? Kinda weird to make it sound like that is not a ridiculously expensive asking price.
