I've been at Microsoft the past couple of days, and they showed us this advert this morning. This is all part of something they're plotting at the moment. There's a lot of subtlety in the advert that probably won't be noticed by most people until they have it explained to them (myself included ;)).

The objective of this ad wasn't to sell any Microsoft stuff, it was really to make Microsoft's image more palatable towards consumers.

As for the ad, I thought it was merely okay. I didn't get it either. But I would argue that this is the best advertisement that Microsoft has ever put out. (Except for the Windows 95 advertisement, of course.)

I believe that over time, more people will warm up to these ads. Don't underestimate the power of advertising, people. The more a theme is repeated, the more it is likely to be embraced.

At least the commercial wasn't like "ZOMG VISTA ROCKS" or "MACS SUX".

Sheesh...what is Microsoft thinking? The only way to be clever would be to have Seinfeld and some effeminate guy...say...Nick Swardson, standing in front of a blank white background, Swardson with a big Apple symbol on his t-shirt, Seinfeld with a large Windows flag on his, and Seinfeld mercilessly bashing him on completely overblown and inflammatory issues that only apply to a fraction of the computing world at large.

Now *that* would be hilarious...

Oh cmon. Microsoft didn't make this commercial for you guys, so they could care less. It's obviously for a completely different crowd.

Which crowd would that be? It was trying to be Seinfeld (the sitcom) but it was never Jerry that made that show funny, it was the supporting characters that overshadowed him and stole his show. This commercial failed to market any product, and it failed to provide any humor. Maybe the next will contribute something to this $10M ad campaign, but it looks to be bust at the moment.

The ad sure makes a great impression 'bout Bill Gates.. Kinda like a feel good promo.. Its up on the Microsoft Website in HQ

I must say .. that site it links to (new Windows site?) is pretty freaking awesome...

Loving the HQ of the silverlight stream.. try that using FLV ;)

The commercial, like a poem, alludes to many subtle meanings to which you must pay close attention to notice. The shoes, called Conquistadors (Spanish for "Conquerers"), allude to how he conquered North America with Microsoft, like how the Spanish Conquistadors of the 15–19th centuries brought large parts of America under Spanish colonial rule. That explains the Mexican girl behind the glass who asks, about Bill Gates, in Spanish, "Is that the Conquistador?" The commercial alludes to many other things, but I shall not say anymore :)

This is the kind of advertisement that would encourage me to buy a Mac.

Seriously though, I heard of a Sienfeld/Bill Gates ad and I assumed it was for a shoe company. Yes, I didn't recognize the name but there are plenty of chains that exist in other parts of North America. I was wondering why Bill Gates would bother shilling for a shoe company, given his enormous personal wealth and then I heard the jokes about Windows at the end. Wha?!?

Epic fail.

Watch this one, much better than the first. Much more is explained in this one, like about how they're trying to connect with real people and such.

EDIT: I don't understand the message behind the grandmother though. Very strange.

    • "just $100 per TB"? Just? Are we trying to make this seem like the new normal? Kinda weird to make it sound like that is not a ridiculously expensive asking price.
    • The reviews you refer to mean nothing. Where there is no journalism there is no reason to call the gaming media's opinion pieces "reviews". For GP games there is indeed a metric for success - increasing subscriptions. Which turns in revenue. The only circumstance in which subs do not rise when great is being released is a Game Pass system where the company is close to fully saturated with customers in a subscription. However, in that case as the theory goes you spend aplenty in all kind of games - from shady live service cash cows and customer offending agitprop crap in purple colours to robust and entertaining single player games. And keep a solid level of profitability. Ignoring the simply innocuous but mid games MGS has released primarily of the second kind.
    • Report: Microsoft to use AWS to help GitHub deal with a major surge in demand by Pradeep Viswanathan Thanks to the surge of coding AI agents, GitHub's usage has skyrocketed over the past 12 months. To meet this demand, GitHub started with a plan in October 2025 to increase capacity by 10x. However, by early this year, the company realized that it needed 30x scale. This rapid growth has caused severe strain on the platform's reliability, resulting in several small outages over the past few months. In April, GitHub published a long blog post explaining the steps it is taking to resolve these reliability issues. In the post, the company also confirmed that it is working toward a multi-cloud architecture for better resilience. Today, Business Insider reported that GitHub is turning to Amazon Web Services to help deal with a major surge in AI-driven coding activity. It is important to note that GitHub is still in the process of moving completely to the Azure cloud. The current plan is to move the platform fully to Azure by 2027 so that it can scale better as per developer demand. Therefore, the current decision to utilize AWS might be part of a short-term plan to meet immediate demand. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that GitHub is using multiple cloud providers with the following statement: For Microsoft, the decision highlights the operational pressure behind the AI boom. GitHub has to stay reliable for developers at a time when rivals such as Codex, Cursor, Claude Code, and other AI coding tools are gaining attention. And the decision to use AWS for computing capacity seems practical given the circumstances.
