I just ordered a Dell XPS M1330...

Recommended Posts

Does anyone else here have one? If so, what do you think of it? I got mine configured with an Intel C2D @ 2.4 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and an Intel GMA X3100. I'm actually going to be running Windows Vista 64-bit edition, so I'm going to get a 4 GB RAM kit from Crucial, who charges much less than Dell does. I was also leaning towards the nVidia GPU, but I've heard that it caused some major overheating issues, and I also have no plans to be gaming. I had an X3100 in my MacBook (which I'm replacing with this) and it works just fine.

Finally, how is the build quality? It's not plastic, correct? I've read that it has a magnesium alloy chassis and a brushed metal lid.

My wife has one. Yeah the build quality is fine, the lid is plastic... most or all of it is plastic. What wireless card did you get? I don't particularly like our Dell 1505 that supports 802.11n draft. It drops connections a lot. I'm thinking the Intel one would have been better.

We only have 2GB, and you're right... thats not enough for Vista. Anyway, I think you'll like it if you don't intend to game.

Ah, I thought it was made out of magnesium alloy? It's just plastic? I did get the Intel Wireless-N card, but I'm getting Vista 64-bit so that I can take advantage of the hardware. Vista, for me, runs fine with 1 GB of RAM, so obviously 2+ GB will be just fine.

My friend also just bought an XPS. I'm running a clean install for him right now. You wouldn't believe the crap Dell put on it :p

Oh, I know. I had a Dell Inspiron E1405 and the first thing I did was do a clean install of XP Professional. (They gave me a Media Center Edition restore disc.) This is actually going to be replacing my MacBook. I really like Mac OS X, but I'm more productive in Windows and I find that it works better with the rest of my home network, which is all PC based.

So, does Dell now give you actual Home Premium DVDs, or is it still that restore disc crap? I know already the first thing I do when getting the XPS is to go ahead and do a clean format of Vista.

And I'm glad to hear that people here like it. I really wanted a 13'' to replace my MacBook, and it's nice to see that for less money, I get a LED display and the notebook weights a full pound less. The XPS M1530 was nice, but it's too big for my needs.

AFAIK, Dell provides an original Windows Vista OEM DVD. They don't give any restore disc crap like HP.

Not with my friend they did, he too bought a XPS M1330. However, for the price he got, it was a pretty good deal. The only thing I don't like is that it's slot loading, which makes a very loud sound, and that it only has 2 USB ports. Which is why I bought my father a dv3209TX, which is also 13", has 3 USB ports, one an e-SATA/USB combo, sound over HDMI, a removable DVD drive to make it lighter and the logo on the back lights up. Cool, isn't it :p ?
