Renting a car in Canada

Recommended Posts

Next weekend I need to move to my new apartment on campus, and I have to take all my stuff. My friend said he'll help me, but his car is a VW Golf hatchback, which is pretty small. I'm thinking about renting a truck or a bigger car for one day. Is there a minimum age to legally rent a car in Canada?

yes, thouhg it's not law, it's set by the insurance companies. The insurance companies themselves won't rent until you are over 24, though a few will do 21 and over. A FEW. It will be expensive if you find one that will if you're under 24 but over 21. If you're under 21 don't even try at all.

What I would honestly recommend is going and trying to rent one from a place like Rent-a-Wreck. I needed my dad to co-sign at 18, but I was able to. They also don't care if you scratch it up a bit. It's also usually cheaper...

I would like to say Canadian licencing law is stupid. I have a Full UK Driving licence and can drive unsupervised anytime I want, but after 6 months have to get a Canadian licence where I must be supervised and there are restrictive hours I could drive etc, these restrictions would last 2 years for me.

it's not the same everywhere in Canada, the specific one you're talking about is the one for BC, it's different for each province
