Is it still possible to migrate your XP license?

Recommended Posts

I'm about to buy one of the FreeDOS PC's from Dell because I already have Windows XP. I'm wondering if it's still possible to migrate my Windows license from my current PC to the new PC. Is this still possible even though MS has stopped supporting XP? Thanks for any help.

Microsoft never stopped supporting XP. It has support up to 2012 with updates as well. Try calling them up and discussing the terms with them. Get the phone number from their "Contact Us" section around the very bottom of their page and choose your country and it will display the available numbers.

Errr, yeah...I meant stopped selling instead of supporting. But still, this should work, right?

OEM Dies with the motherboard it was activated on, but i believe retail can be transfered. Don't quote me on that though!

Yes, I have a retail copy...built my own PC back on '01.

As long as you have the same product key and the same retail XP Home/Pro/Media you have, call Microsoft and give them the details so you can activate it and be done.

No, after something like 6 months of no activation attempts, the online activation service will work without calling Microsoft. Activation was always intended to stop "casual copying", not legitimate users, so it has a bit more leeway than the actual license agreement does.

If you install XP on your new machine, and it doesn't activate for some reason, when you call Microsoft make sure you inform them that the old hard drive has been/will be formatted. Pretty much the only thing they'll want to check (just for the sake of having it on the recording of the call), is that only 1 installation with your serial key will be running.

As long as he has his product key or a temporary unlicensed SP3 until he finds his key, then activate away. The 6 month time thing is actually new to me though.

    • And none of them have a "notchless" 3:2 OLED screen, for which I was always willing to pay more.
