pcmang
I want to buy the new 4870X2 now, but inno if it will fit in my case, and i dont know if my psu will screw up. I have a 650W and it says exactly 650W required, but inno if thats minimum, also im going to be using the connector adapter. (My specs are in my sig). Should I be worrying? Im also a bit worried about heat although ive got 2 12cm in front, 1 12cm in back, 1 12cm on side, and 1 200cm on top. So i think im ok with cooling for the card. http://ati.amd.com/products/certified/powe...lies.html#pstop ati exculded the 4870X2 from my TP3(650W) AKA TruePower Trio, i think im gunna have to settle for the 4870. I just want it to be better than the 9800GTX. Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/666460-i-want-to-buy-4870x2-now-but/ Share on other sites
bob_c_b
Are you getting a bigger monitor soon? If not, why bother with the x2? A single 4870 can drive the vast majority of games at 1920x1200, so you would have plenty of headroom. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted September 7, 2008 Veteran Share Posted September 7, 2008 The PSU might be cutting it close and your CPU is going to bottleneck the video card. As for the card's length, it's about 10.5" long. Use some measuring tape to see if you'll have enough space. I have a HD 4850 and it can barely fit in my Antec Nine Hundred gaming case. Also, you have a 19" LCD monitor with a resolution of 1440x900 or 1280x1024. A single HD 4850 or HD 4870 is enough for your gaming needs. gwai lo
Considering the rest of your build, you won't be anywhere near your PSU limit. However, I agree with bob_c_b. edit: Cutting it close? How the crap did you come to that conclusion? However, I agree with bob_c_b.edit: Cutting it close? How the crap did you come to that conclusion? Hey, I was just trying to give some reasonable advice. I figured it would be cutting it close since the card sucks 200W (idle) and 400W (load). pcmang
Yeah i've decided to just go with the 4870 XOC Black edition. Well as long as your 4850 fits than mine will fit. BTW i'll just take off the middle fan slot snice im not using it. BTW i'm sorry im noob but whats bottlenecking? all i know is that it's bad for one part to be better than other parts. BTW this is for Crysis & future games. I don't want to buy video card for at least 2 years. Bottlenecking is when one or more of your components slows down a specific component. For instance, coupling a slow CPU with a fast GPU will bottleneck the GPU and make it perform worse than it actually could. In your case, the CPU you have will bottleneck the HD 4870X2 (to a degree). I'm sure the HD 4870X2 will be good for the next 1 and a half years. Remember though, the lifespan for video cards depends on the market. Take a look at how long the GeForce 8 series was around. It was released in 2006 and only succeeded by the GeForce 9 series in 2008. gwai lo
Well, in this case he's running 1280?1024, he may be bottlenecking by staying at stock speeds...but consider what he would be losing in terms of FPS. 150 to 120? Additionally, G80 was a pretty bad demonstration of that theory...Nvidia was just sitting waiting for ATI. We were supposed to get a new chip at the end of the year but it was just pushed back because they had no real reason to throw out a new generation. bob_c_b
I'd take some cash and get a bigger monitor, even a 4850 is sitting around waiting for something to work on below 1680x1050.
