free Proxy server

Recommended Posts

Heya,

I've got a little bit of problem where we have users accessing websites which are costing us a lot of money which we don't really want to spend on internet usage/charges.

Is there a freebie program out there that can be installed on our windows 2003 server (standard edition i believe it is) to monitor websites that are accessed through the server as it is the default gateway to the internet and if a user goes to say ebay.com they're redirected to an error page which tells them why they're not getting through to ebay?

At the moment the server is configured with DHCP, NAT, DNS, VPN, AD and DC and IIS (which for some reason does not execute php scripts too :().

Any help with regards to this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I was planning of just using a login script to add the websites to the hosts file and then point them to a server:port number which only handled error requests, but we'd like to see usages as well.

We also have some clients who are not part of the domain but use the internet through our server (inside the same organization ofcourse).

Cheers,

Alkaif.

To keep things MS, i'd recommend ISA, however, if thats out of your budget, you can do all sorts with Squid

Squid

http://www.squid-cache.org/

Used with something like Dans Guardian

http://dansguardian.org/

If you have a spare box laying around, i'd highly recommend setting up something like PFSESNE/M0n0wall/IPCOP/Sonicwall of something else of that nature which would give you alot more control over your internet.

If another box is a problem, you can always use a VM!

hey thanks turbo,

I had thought about squid but don't think i can do that. I do have many spare boxes at home that i dont mind taking into the org but i dont think they want another box running.

however do you know any good tutorial websites that will show how to install/configure ISA step by step?

I tried to google for some but didn't really see anything of that nature. Last time i tried to use ISA i managed to screw up the servers :( *sigh*
