How Do I Change Game Resolution in the Command Line?

Recommended Posts

Sorry, I'm such a newb when it comes to this stuff, but I have apps downloaded from steam that require you to change the resolution in the command line. I can't figure out how to get this to work. Will this not work because they are steam games? Some of the games in question are Hexen 2, Quake Mission packs 1 and 2, etc.

In the options it says Video modes must be set in the command line with -width <width> and -bpp <bits-per-pixel>

So, I've tried putting C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\hexen 2\glh2.exe -width 1680x1050 -bpp 32 into the command line and that doesn't work.

I've tried just glh2.exe -width 1680x1050 -bpp 32 in the command line with no success

I've tried putting C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\hexen 2\glh2.exe -width 1680x1050 -bpp in the run prompt and that just opens the app normally.

I've tried putting -width 1680x1050 -bpp 32 in the startup options for the Steam game's properties, that doesn't work.

I'm guessing the solution is easy but I can't figure it out. All the searches I have done have turned up answers that were leaving out pieces of information that is probably pretty basic, but I don't have a clue.

Can someone explain what to do, step by step for someone who doesn't know a thing about this command line stuff. Thank you in advance!

if i can remember correctly it goes " -width XXXX -height XXXX " and then after the -bpp for the older quake engine

But it says to do this in the command line.

what else goes in there. Seriously I have no clue about any of this.

"1680x1050" is not a width.

%programfiles%\Steam\steamapps\common\hexen 2\glh2.exe -width 1680 -height 1050 -bbp 16 (or 32, or whatever)

Before you freak out, i didn't feel like typing "c:\program files"... %programfiles% is the variable that represents it.

In the Steam games window, right click on the game, select "Properties" then on the "General" tab, hit the "Set launch options..." button. Then follow I8PP's instructions. You weren't following the proper syntax.

Hey all. I just bought Hexen 2 from Steam Games and sometimes it crashes on me. When I first started the game, it gave me an error, which mentioned something about Open GL. Also, the game only seems to run in full-screen mode. I cannot get it to run in windowed mode no matter what I do. Can anyone help me?

    • Fully agree with that last sentence. I wasn't able to get the card I wanted at launch, and refuse to play these games with their MSRPs since then. Not a chance I'm going to encourage the price hiking, and I'm fine waiting however long I need to buy a card at the advertised MSRP - for myself however, it's for a 9070 XT... It sucks that lots of people don't do the same, but I get it. I am curious though, in earnest, about your remark about the 9070 XT vs the 5070 Ti - and not to debate or attempt to convince, just genuinely wondering assuming you're speaking of gaming - why do you mention the performance difference between the two being so stark? The 5070 Ti does certainly beat the former in efficiency, but all of the benchmarks I've seen have put them almost equal to each other in performance, with the two more or less trading blows depending on the game, and the overall difference around about 5% in favor of Green. Again, just curious! Not wanting to argue, the assertion was just intriguing to me.
    • I've been thinking about getting a new phone - I'm currently using the Samsung S20+. Looking at a comparison website, I think my only concerns are the resolution and possible sound downgrade. But for that price I think it might be worth trying out.
