Which Linux Applications are you looking for?

apps thats kinda holding me to winblows is ( itunes+quicktime (for ipod sync, podcasts) , clone dvd2, any dvd, mp3tag - (but im sure theres a 1 like for nix), sonyerricson support for my mobile phone - k850i, logitech (for my mx3200 key mouse combo and usb headset and dual action pad) convert x to dvd, and finally media converter for mp3,to video's (super) i could dual boot for wot nix couldnt support but i dont really wish to dual boot as im not keen on grub as i have attempted b4 and had to reformat and start over :( but the new wubi feature on ubuntu 8.04 hardy alpha 5 i tried that 2 times tonite and both times its failed for sum reason., i think usb related :unsure: but the boot option of it is good different to grub least is from last time i tryed i really want to use either ubuntu or linix mint tho :cry:

itunes/quicktime - Pretty much all of the popular audio players for linux can copy to ipod's (I'm not sure about iPod Touch's yet). Although I don't use podcasts, I've seen options for them in some audio players and I' fairly sure you could sync them as well.

clone dvd2 - Not sure if clone dvd2 has any special abilities or anything, but there's ways to backup and clone dvd's under linux. Tools like dvd decryptor dvd shrink work under wine if you don't want to use the native linux apps.

mp3tag - I use a progra called Easy Tag, which is similar to "Tag & Rename". But yeh there's tagging programs for linux.

SE Phone - I have no idea about this

Logitech stuff - Again as I don't have them, I don't know. And can't be arsed to google to find out.

convertxtodvd - Works under wine, but there's linux alternatives like DeVeDe as well.

media convert to mp3? - Not too sure what you need, but there's numerous ways to encode files to mp3 either via the command line or with gui's.

For iPod you can through Rockbox on it and then be free of stupid software like iTunes. Amarok will take care of everything else (better).

There isn't a substitute for AnyDVD but there are plenty of ripping apps for Linux.

You can run Mp3tag in Wine: http://www.anytag.de/forums/index.php?showtopic=3646 Or use an alternative. I actually use foobar2000 in Wine.

No idea about your telephone. I don't buy hardware which relies on proprietary software.

Logitech don't support Linux, but you can get your mouse and keyboard extra functions to work, it just takes some work.

For encoding MP3s, LAME runs on Linux anyway. For videos, XviD and x264 both run on Linux so no problem there. There are plenty of frontends for all of these, check out: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/linux-video-tools OGMRip looks nice. I actually use Handbrake CLI for encoding.

As far as the ipod podcast support i use rhythmbox and gpodder. I don't actually use an ipod due to my extreme disdain for apple and the fact that I refuse to pay for an overpriced under featured mp3 player that doesn't support my formats of choice ( use to be wmv now is ogg and flac) but they will work with an ipod.

Does anybody know of any way to get a zune series 2 to work with linux? My girlfriend has one and i'm trying to get her to switch but she has a zune and i can't get it to work.

As far as the topic of this thread i'd love to see more real current big named games made native for linux. I know that UT3 and Enemy Territories work natively and that it's not to hard to get WOW working under wine but Linux needs native game support weather they get DX working on it or convince more companies to use open gl I really need games (only reason i'm not running only linux).

Also a good HD video editing program and some software for publishing podcasts would rock ( if anybody knows of such software plz tell me I really need it)

Yes, more games need to be released for Linux. EA have talked about the next Battlefield game being available for OSX so from there it should be trivial to get it working on Linux. What would also be great is if more game developers checked out how their game works in Wine. All Steam/Source games work great in Wine with no special configuration needed. That can't be said of most games, though. Google have started distributing software for Linux that depends on Wine (ie. Cedega, Google Earth) and I don't have a problem with using Wine to play games. It would be great if games developers could start contributing patches, like Crossover do (commercial Wine vendor which specialise in getting Office and the like to work well).

Zune is currently a no-go it seems. Microsoft apparently has a secret handshake of sorts before files can be transferred. A Linux user can connect and see the files, but that's about it.

As far as HD video editing, maybe try Cinelerra? It is available in HeroineWarrior form, or in Community form.

Surprise, surprise :rolleyes: This is just one reason why you should not buy proprietary hardware like this! A more free non-branded one would've done a better job for less money (and by better job I mean do anything at all, because as far as a linux or OSX user is concerned, a Zune is just an expensive paper weight).

I would really like an ActiveSync replacement for Linux that syncs to Evolution.

Easy, follow instructions at http://www.synce.org/moin/ - worked perfectly first time in Ubuntu 7.10. I can sync calender, contacts and tasks with no problem using my Dell Axim x51v, Multisync-qad is the application I use, the backends are Synce and Opensync, and it's far quicker than Activesync (works as soon as I plug in the PDA). You can also browse the device in Nautilus.

You can use wget if you need help type man wget. I found a nice gui frontend Gwget for GNOME. I use it only from the command line and don't know other graphical frontends.

I'd be in need of a decent Capture Card application. I tweaked out TV Time but that alone cant just help with all the world standards on game console resolutions.

Also a nice Video Editor/ Capture app.

Right now I'm using mencoder shell scripts to dump the streams but I'd like having to see the real time playback while capturing. Video4Linux 1 /2 are not good enough with Philips SAA 7114 chips or Bt8b8. I/O errors occur or resfuse to acces the hardware twice for the purposes I need.

You know it's amazing how the gap has shorted, even last year you would need to find a few necessary apps to make your transition complete but now it's just easy.

So, if you where a big iTune user (with the iTune Store) say goodbye to all your paid downloaded songs/movies. That's a no-go for Linux. Same if you are a Zune user.

As for the Logitech (and many other hardware), the "it just takes some work" is not a good answer if Linux wants to move forward in the desktop. It just NEEDS to work. I know it's Logitech fault, but things like that will hold back many would be Linux users.

As for software, I need Photoshop CS3 and.... Games to work correctly with Linux. What about native software, would be nice to forget about Wine.
