This isn't a very complicated matter.

The United Kingdom is made up of England, Wales, Scotland, and The Republic of Ireland, which is a small top part of Ireland itself.

Because it has the Republic of Ireland, it is technically not one island, but one and part of another.

Great Britain is made up of just England, Wales and Scotland, Great Britain is an island.

And that's it.

So the answer to the question would be no.

Dude. Northern Ireland is the "small top part of Ireland itself", and the part that is in the UK.

i am not aware of one person, except possibly you now, that thinks the UK includes Ireland.

Unfortunately, I've come across my fair share of people that thought the UK included the Republic of Ireland, even a lot of British people.

^Yeah but it is unlikely to ever happen. Eventhough it would be more organised I don't think that would please many people in N.Ireland ;) Also the Republic of Ireland would not like to be under the monarchy of the UK, they have a President so it wouldn't make sense.

its an island

You even live here and think it's an island?

Great Britain = England, Scotland and Wales = Island

UK = Great Britain and Northern Ireland = Not Island

"Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border" surely this means that the UK as a whole is not classed as an Island.

Need better geography in schools :s All you learn about at GCSE is about rocks and water, hardly anything to do with actually knowing where countries are and classifications. (I did the syllabus a year ago so I should know).

It should go like below:

Northern Ireland becomes part of Ireland, it's all called Ireland.

England, Wales, Scotland & Ireland = United Kingdom / Great Britain

However, that is my opinion because I like things organised.

Or...

The whole island of Ireland is entirely its own nation, leaving England, Wales and Scotland in the UK/Great Britain - I reckon that would be a tidier and more trouble free idea. Eh...maybe not trouble free :-/

First, lets teach you folks what an island is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island

An island (IPA: /ˈaɪlənd/) or isle (/ˈaɪl/) is any piece of land that is completely surrounded by water in two dimensions, above high tide, and isolated from other significant landmasses.

Right.

Now, what's the UK made up of?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom, the UK or Britain,[11][12] is a sovereign island country[13][14] located off the northwestern coast of continental Europe.

So the UK is made up of 2 islands.

Yipee for looking things up.

But Northern Ireland is on an island isn't it?

Could say the same about Italy, it's just on a continental size island.

Also if it's classed as two islands (it would actually be a lot more than two, taking into account the ones around it), then it still wouldn't be classed as an island, rather a set of islands.

Isn't this rather trivial anyway? :p

Americans, come back, all is forgiven, at least I've never heard of an American thinking Canada is in the United States.

I may as well put my two bobs worth in. I'm in the camp that says the UK is not an island because of Northern Ireland...but I wouldn't argue somebody calling it an island nation because all of it is on one island or another and it's not surrounded by land like France or Germany is.

But don't listen to me, I'm from the colonies.

Whether you like it or not NI is part of the UK.
