[Analysts] Low review scores equals Low game sales

Recommended Posts

Quality matters in video games, especially shooters

With consumers feeling the pinch in their pocketbooks, this holiday season may turn out to be more cutthroat than usual for the hundreds of video games set to hit store shelves.

Analysts predict that only top-tier titles and those that are highly rated by critics will thrive as consumers pare down spending in the fourth quarter, when the game industry typically pulls in 40% of its annual revenue.

This will be particularly true of shooter games. The genre is highly sensitive to quality rankings doled out by reviewers, generally on a scale of 0 to 100.

"It is pretty detrimental to sales for a shooter game to achieve a score below 80%," said Jesse Divnich, director of analytical services at Electronic Entertainment Design and Research in San Diego. "Simply put, if you want to make a first-person shooter, aim to achieve quality scores above 80%. If not, don?t even bother."

This is the conclusion Electronic Arts came to earlier this week when it pulled the plug on Tiberium, a science-fiction shooter game that had been several years in development. The chart below shows just how brutal buyers can be when it comes to low scores. Add the current economic fear factor and the pressure becomes even greater.

Someone should pay these guys more!:laugh:h:

Wow I gotta get me a job as an Analyst, get paid to state the obvious. I await the report that people buy food that tastes nice.

To be fair though, the games rated that hightly tend to be big selling games based on the hype, such as GTA4 and Halo3. I'm sure LBP and GoW2 will sell highly too regardless of score

well... duh? people buy good games, is that suprising? also, guy buy games nobody knows, plays it, its ****, doesn't reccomend, it was kinda predictable i'd say.

but it doesn't stick onto all games, look at spore, except thoose ass licking sites like IGN and gamespot who rate every game by EA 8.5+ just to get that atta'boy, most people i know, and read ton reviews, spore kinda. well, sucks?. also with DRM, no way im going near it.

C'mon, people! The sarcasm in this thread is not thick enough. We can do better.

With features like HTTPS Everywhere and built-in tracker blocking, Brave keeps your online activities safe from prying eyes. Brave is one of the safest browsers on the market today. It blocks third-party data storage. It protects from browser fingerprinting. And it does all this by default. Speed - Brave is built on Chromium, the same technology that powers Google Chrome, and is optimized for speed, providing a fast and responsive browsing experience. Brave Browser also features Brave Rewards, a system that rewards users with Basic Attention Tokens (BAT) for viewing opt-in ads. This innovative system provides an alternative revenue model for content creators and a way to support the Brave community. SlimBrave Neo takes all the good things about Brave and makes them even better by keeping everything clean, light, and privacy-focused. It removes the extra clutter, turns off features you might not need, and cuts down on anything that could slow you down or collect unnecessary data. Because it relies on simple settings and policies instead of modifying the browser itself, you still get full Brave compatibility—just in a smoother, lighter, and more privacy-friendly package. • Yeah, I signed out of everything when I changed the password to my account. I keep checking device history and there's never anything new other than my own activity.
    • Microsoft are already committed to making patches for Win10 due to the IoT edition, so they may as well continue to sell access as they were doing the work anyway
    • Oh goodie! We can look forward to more videos of people with these huge bombs catching on fire, exploding etc. There is a reason why most countries restrict the size of LiOn batteries, especially in air travel.
