With my Specs, XP or Vista?

Recommended Posts

for now stick to vista 32bit as more is compatable with it but in a few years 64bit will be better, and you don't need more than 2GB unless you keep like 10 large apps open at one time then maybe more would be needed but if i were you i would try it and see how it performs for you,if it feels good then don't need more memory and your hardware would be better suited for vista as xp is too old and gets slow after awhile.i run vista on a 2003 system i put together and it runs great(but i upgraded some stuff).

guys, i installed time trial copy of the 32bit to try it out and to my horror.. its so laggy, im using the aero theme by the way.

please look at the first post for my specs.

Just so you know, there is no trial coy of Vista. Just wanted to tell you before others come and try ripping your head off.

What video card do you have?

Really, there should be no problem on that machine.

My wife's Dell laptop has cruddy X3100 integrated graphics, and still Aero runs reasonably well.

P.S. I can't rage at you about the "time trial" warez. RAID beat me to the punch. :( :p

No video card? (you forgot to mention your GFX card) If it is integrated, I suggest XP because under Vista, the graphics card is utilized a lot more; integrated GPU=graphics simulation by CPU. If it is a physical GPU, then it will run Vista perfectly.

as skilltrail said if you are running integrated graphics then i would upgrade to a dedicated gpu.aero should not be laggy unless your running a crappy gpu or one that does not support dx 9.

He said what Vid card he had in his first post.

Gigabyte 1GB HD4870 PCI-E

I think you need to double check your BIOS settings, install the chipset drivers, update ALL other drivers (vid card, MB, etc) and report back to us.

warez? this iso was downloaded from microsoft if im not wrong.. my friend told me just install it without a key and use it for 30days before i decide which version i would like to purchase.

anyway back to the point, i installed the latest 8.9 cata vista drivers frm amd's site and my moby drivers frm msi.tw (only the Chipset and Ethernet PCI-E NIC Driver) I also installed my creative X-Fi Xtreme PCI-e audio drivers...

i restarted, switch to aero theme. i notice even "drawing" boxes on my desktop was laggy.. i know when u highlight stuff u left click and drag to make a box... hee... every thing seems rather jerky. it wasnt as smooth as what i had expected. I trying running Lineage II which i p2p... :) and it was laggy (move stop move stop) seems like rather low fps..

Did you do anything I suggested, besides the chipset driver?

...and update Windows. Is this Vista with SP1 or not?

the above looks fine.. this is without sp1, i did install sp1 later and did 1 to 3 update thingy which took me 30mins.

anyone have this problem with HD4870? it is less laggy when i switch to vista basic.

you have a point, Vista without SP1 is very buggy/slow/useless.

The 4870 should be a very fast video card. Plus, your Corsair HX 1000w PSU is over kill... but if you're saying all the BIOS settings are correct, you installed SP1 with other updates, and checked the hardware connections.... and it's "laggy".... something is a miss that you missed.

Double check all power connectors going into the MB and the Vid card. Your 1000 watt PSU came with the PCI-E connectors for the video card's power, or you using the adapter running off the molex to power the card?

ahh too technical mate.. there are 2 wires going to my gfx card.. they are in a bunch.. not seperated cable to plug in into the modular "holes" the system would not start and would make a uber long beep if both wires are not plugged into the card

ok i think no 1 would understand me here. haha im sorry guys!!!

You don't have to be sorry. I/we'll do the best we can to help you fix this problem.

The next thing I would do, is to update the BIOS.

my bios is the latest as stated in MSI's website, i had under power problem with my previous system somehow my 8800gtx was damage hence in this new system i bought the 1k watt...

another question, when i boot (windows xp) i have a white progress/loading bar before i see the windows loading boot screen. it takes about 5secs before it switches to the windows boot screen. is this normal? i do not notice this on my previous system

I would go here and update all your drivers this way. Sometimes info on a website can be old/wrong.

As far as XP loading slowly... that might indicate hardware problems or wrong settings if you're getting slowness/laggyness in more than one OS.

xp is very smooth and fast only the booting part i see the white progress bar which i think shouldnt be there..

meanwhile ill try the live update :)

I misunderstood... my bad. That white bar is normal... on older, slower computers.

but my system isnt old nor slow... quad core slow? :(

btw ive done the live update, all are ok.

No, quad core not slow. Not slow at all. The only time I've noticed that bar, is when working on older computers... that's all.

OK. So what exactly about Vista is slow, just the Areo Glass? Have you tried loading up any games and seeing how they preform?

    • O&O ShutUp10 3.1.1104 by Razvan Serea O&O ShutUp10 offers a simple yet effective way to take control of your Windows privacy. It provides access to almost 50 privacy-related tweaks, most of them hidden or not easily accessible to the average computer users. Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10/11 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated. Using ShutUp10 you can easily disable Windows Defender, turn off telemetry, disable peer-to-peer updates, turn off Wi-Fi Sense, disable automatic Windows updates, turn off and reset Cortana and more. ShutUp10 allows you to create a System Restore point before you apply any changes, so that you can revert your system at any time if you run into problems. O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days! O&O ShutUp10 Free and Premium The latest version brings O&O ShutUp10 Premium, expanding the app’s long-standing privacy controls with automatic enforcement of user-defined settings. Instead of manually rechecking options after every Windows update, users can set their preferred privacy configuration once—or apply recommended settings in a single click—and the tool continuously monitors them in the background. If Windows 10 or 11 re-enables disabled features or introduces new data collection paths, Premium restores the chosen settings automatically without user intervention. The free version remains available and fully functional for manual adjustments, offering the same core privacy controls for Windows. However, the Premium tier is aimed at users who want long-term, hands-off protection, adding automatic reapplication after updates, ongoing monitoring, and optional notifications to ensure privacy settings remain consistent over time. • Fascinating...W h i t e P o w e r is now also asterisks out.
    • In the past few days I have noticed two odd moderation activities. First, when I posted the term 'White Nationist Christian' it was asterisk's out. When I changed it to **** it was allowed! Second, in the Politics is a ###business thread I was allowed to post that the GOP is a party of p e d ophiles but I was censored  when I posted the GOP are a party of p e d ophile protectors. Wtf Neowin. Please explain.
