Hey guys, I'm in the need of some new 2.1 speakers, after my little cousin stuck his finger (and broke the cone) of my 'home-made' speaker setup using some JVC (they were brilliant, along with my old subby), which churned out ~30W RMS (8W x2 Tweeters, + 1 15W Subby).

Last week, I ordered the Logitech S200 (which I thought was bigger than the picture...), and to my dismay, it was RUBBISH...lol the subwoofer couldn't handle any bass and the tweeters were crappy and sounded like a laptop.

So I've done my research this time, and I'm torn between the:

Logitech X-240 (25W Total RMS, a dock that I don't need, down firing 4" bass speaker - 15W)

32780-7-1.jpg

and the Altec Lansing VS4221 (35W RMS, with down firing mid-range speakers, two high-range speakers, and a HUGE subwoofer with a 6" down firing bass speaker - 19W)...<--- This is what I'm leaning towards more, due to their superior quality (not that logitech are rubbish, but they have a brilliant reputation) and great bass response.

AltecVS4221_S600.jpg

Hopefull my SB Audigy SE is good enough for either setup (sure, they're no X-Fi Xtreme Platinum Titanium Range, but they're nice)...oh and btw, can I get a soft mod for my SB audigy se to convert it to a audigy 2 zs or something (i can only find that for the audigy 1 non se)...thanks!

Klipsch, if you can afford it. I had the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 system and it was phenomenal.

What about the logitech x-2300's? I have them and absolutely love them!

Z-2300's :)

I agree, bought them just last week and they're fantastic and I'm using them with my laptop's integrated audio

+1

If one has a bit of cash, but not enough to venture outside of the standard PC speaers on the market, these are the best bang for the buck, along with the Klipsch ProMedias 2.1 THX.

I haven't heard the Klipsch's but if they're compared to the Z-2300's they must be phenomenal as well.

Plus the Z-2300's are like $120 for you guys in america (had to pay about $180 for them here)

Anyway, from your original post, those Altec Lansings will blow the X240's out of the water.

Overall:

If you can afford them get the Logitech Z-2300's or the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX if you can't get the Altec Lansings

Hey guys, thanks for the info. Just looked into it and most of those are kinda out of my price range :(. I can't find the Klipsch ProMedia for sale in the UK anywhere which sucks :( but I think I may get either the Altec VS4221 (hopefully they're decent), but theZ-2300 which are much more expensive. Sure, the Altec speakers look a little strange but hopefully they'll sound good. I do like the Z-2300 though, but I expect the sub to be HUGE :p.

So presumably the sound quality of the altecs is good...right? (not phenomenal, but good, i suppose...better than the logitechs...)

oh and how are the X-230s guys? I've been looking and they've got tonnes of brilliant reviews...everyone loves them? but are they as good as the Altecs? I've seen them up in real life, and don't like the subby design though...

That would be my suggestion

Yes, the sub is huge.

but I think I may get either the Altec VS4221 (hopefully they're decent)

I've heard quite a few people say they are good.

Yes it should actually be pretty good and yes, better than the X240's. Lets just say you won't miss out on much.

The Altecs should be better.

My roomate has the X230's and theyre pretty decent, however I've heard the Altecs are even better.

BTW, how much are the VS4221, X230, X240, Z2300 in the UK? (In pounds)

In the UK the z 2300's are ?91.38 ($160.60 US) Ebuyer.co.uk

the x 230's are ?31.90 ($56.00 US) Amazon.co.uk

the x 240's are ?29.59 ($51.80 US) Amazon.co.uk

the VS4221 are ?27.99 ($49.00 US) Play.com

So yeah.... the z2300's are the most expensive. I used to have the x230's and they were really good but they're like headphones when compared to the z2300's. If you cant afford the z2300's then either go for the x230's (because they are really good in thier class) or the other one people have mentioed here. Let us know what you do. (the VS4221's look the best simply because they have a wireless remote)

(OT; logitech support are amazing! They just replaced my old z5400 5.1 system with the newer z5500 digital system absolutley free under warrenty! They are truly amazing speakers!!!!!:D; :D )

If your budget can support it, I would suggest going for a home theater sound system.

I currently own this

Onkyo SKS-HT540

I love it, the sound it produces for me. But it's just my opinion on it.

But I would say if you want good sound that isn't a risk, go for a home system, go listen to some and see what you like.

thanks guys, I probably will go for the altecs then...seeing they probably give the most bang for buck. I'll let you know how it goes...perhaps even a review?

Cheers ;)

Thanks WinGz, I've found a few strange branded 5.1 setup's but I don't know if they're any good... I'd prefer sticking to a good quality 2.1 set than a poorer quality 5.1 set (anyone ever heard of yaruku...? ebuyer sell them for ~?25 for 5.1)

I have the X-230s and they are decent, but I also spend a lot of time with headphones on so my speakers aren't as big of a deal for me. If you rely on speakers, go for a better set.

hey guys...problem :s

I received an email from the people who i sent back the S220s from saying that my refund has been approved. Instead of refunding the money though, they have sent me a new order from some X-210s instead??? Very very annoying...and I can't be bothered to got through the whole RMA process again. (the good thing is that they didn't take any more money for the difference...+?10:)) )...

Anyways, does anyone know how good these speakers are? (the high range ones look like the X-230s)...

Cheers:ss:ss

The low-end Logitech are pretty horrible... In the low-end I think the Altec Lansing VS4221 pack the most punch. I was quite impressed when I heard them. Of course you get muddy bass and very colored spectrum but that's to be expected in that price range. At least the mids and highs are somewhat decent, and the sub does move substantial air.

In the mid-range (~130$) I'd go with a Logitech Z-2300, they are very loud, not well balanced but for video games it's quite good.

In the "high-end" (~200$) few speakers compete with the Klipsch Pro Media 2.1.... although if money is no object there are MUCH better solutions out there. Audioengine and Swan make some incredible computer speakers. I just bought myself the A5 (350$) as an upgrade to the Klipsch PM2.1. And for truly audiophile sound there is no alternative to quality bookshelf speakers + amplifier, but now you're looking at anywhere between 400 and 2000$.

Just sent the retailer a very angry note via their online support system. It's been sorted...all i have to do is reject the delivery and it will be sent back to the retailer who will then *finally* refund the money. Guess I will be getting my Altecs after all :)...the only thing I dont like about them is the ugly high range speakers...any alternatives in the same price range (?20-35)...? If not, Altecs it is...

Wow, I didn't even know X210's existed. They look like the X230's except they only have a single driver per satellite.

Try them out and see if you like them.

lol...perhaps thats a bad sign...

    • Major Xbox layoffs may claim South of Midnight developer Compulsion entirely by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Microsoft has been making major changes in its gaming wing Xbox for a few months now, including the appointment of a new CEO, a large number of leadership changes, and strategy shifts. However, the company is seemingly also looking at initiating a major layoffs wave at Xbox and perhaps even a studio closure. The new report lands from Kotaku, Xbox first-party developer Compulsion Games is being shuttered soon by Microsoft. For those unfamiliar with the studio, it's the team behind Contrast (2013), We Happy Few (2018), and South of Midnight (2025). Its latest game was quite well received, even winning a Peabody Award for its writing. It even received a 9/10 in Neowin's own review, highlighting its engaging storyline, gorgeous world, and curious characters. The studio joined Xbox Game Studios in 2018, just as Microsoft announced it is acquiring Playground Games, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory. Despite recent listings for new staff roles, according to the new report, Compulsion Games is being closed entirely, with over 90 staff being let go. Kotaku also added that the studio's leadership is in negotiations with Microsoft about this decision, but no official details have been revealed yet. The report lands just as two senior managers of Xbox leave their posts at Microsoft Gaming. Head of Xbox Game Studios Craig Duncan and chief of staff Louise O'Connor originally began their journey in Rare and have been a part of Xbox for over two decades. Dunkan has been responsible for games like Kinect Sports and Sea of Thieves, while O'Connor was primarily working on Rare's Everwild project before its cancelation. If this report about the studio shutdown is accurate, this may just be the start of a major new layoffs wave at Xbox Game Studios. There are also rumors of Arkane Studios being heavily affected. As always, take all these reports with a grain of salt until something official materializes from Microsoft or the studios.
    • The flaw with this analysis is that this laptop has a cellphone CPU in it. In the Intel world, that would be an N150 and those are everywhere, even in low end laptops. You can get an N150 based NUC with 16GB RAM and 256GB-512GB SSD... NOT soldered in... for < $500 Canadian (around US$360). The problem is two fold: tech bloggers/writers on most tech site (like this one, ironically) overvalue Apple and apparently aren't in the same earnings class as most regular people. As a result, we get breathless articles about how everyone needs a folding phone when most people just cannot afford one... or really need one. And we get Apple used as the baseline metric regardless of whether that comparison makes any sense. If Dell or HP released a retail laptop with a cellphone motherboard, you'd be all over them for doing that - but Apple does it and it's genius. I see articles suggesting what Samsung - a company that basically started the foldable phone market and has built them for eight years - needs to do to compete with Apple's unreleased, unspecced and unseen folding phone. Sorry, no - if the Neo (really creative name there BTW - still, better than the Go, the other "creative" product name everyone's using) encourages PC makers to make cellphone laptops using lower end ARM processors, we all lose. It's a step backwards and a capitulation to the fact that semiconductor makers and computer OEMs (and tech bloggers) have totally lost the plot.
