Windows DVD maker crashes.

I'm trying to make a DVD out of a divx file, but after adding the videos, click next, then crashes with that annoying "Windows DVD maker has stopped working." Then it closes. Any ideas what could be going on? Maybe someone has got some alternative dvd making programs (preferably free)?

Windows DVD Maker cannot read Divx files dude. It has to be either MPG, MPEG or WMV. The AVI files made by Divx do not work for some reason. I happened to be as well.

I just had a look at this out of curiousity and it seems to load .avi files just fine for me .. I didn't go so far as to try and burn anything though (no spare disks).

This is in a fresh Vista 32bit install (nearly) .. with just the DIVX codec installed ..

That's happily not true. :) AVI files will work fine in Movie Maker. You might have a bogus codec - if you supply that fault information that would be illuminative.

Various versions of DivX have various fun bugs, which is one of the reasons why FFDShow Tryouts is a popular MPEG4-in-AVI alternative.

It's possible that your encoder is spitting out ".divx" or some other randomness, in which case you probably would want to switch encoders to something normaler. :)

You can get Windows DVD Maker to work?? all it ever does is crash for me, doesn't matter what I do or what files I use it just crashes all the time :/ it was annoying, cause I wanted to try it out :p oh well, life goes on :laugh:

There's a number of retarded codec packs that registered an absolutely incompatible codec on Vista that would cripple DVD Maker, but without the crash information it'd be nearly impossible to guess if that's your source of error. Happily once you know that information, if that information is useful, it can take about a minute to fix it up...
