Vista uses up 4gigs of memory and freezes my computer

It seems to me that a lot of questions are being asked and assumptions being reached, but not really a lot of new questions being proposed that would lead to a real solution...

What is happening when these slowdowns occur? RAM usage isn't important really (as RAM utilization has no real noticeable effect on performance until it fills and frequent HD paging occurs)... Is the HD being accessed a lot? The only way Windows will slowdown is due to a heavy I/O operations as HD access is very slow (in the scenario discussed)....

If your HD is being accessed a lot when this happens you need to find out why... A quick way to check is Resource Monitor in Vista... Open Task Manager (CRTL+Shift+ESC) and hit "Performance" tab then "Resource Monitor". Once open hit "Disk" and see what apps are using I/O. Also watch the trends....

That should give some real insights...

Just to give you some hints there..

The blue memory line shows you how much of your Physical RAM is in use really (it doesn't add the CACHE in) and the green lines in that same box will show "Hard Faults" which is when something is requested that isn't in RAM and it has to go back to HD for it.

If you need any more info on reading that stuff check help or send me a PM and I'll explain it in more detail.

it seem to me that there is a application that you are running causing a memory leak within your system. best is to check your task manager and show processes from all users to see which services might be eating up all your physical memory.

well i found a patch fixed that might be related to the same issue you have.
