Hey Neowin homies! I'm looking to upgrade my PSU, GPU and two hard drives this week or early next.

I'm looking at this.

What I want to know, is that enough to power:

MSI P35 Platinum Combo

Q6600

2x 640 AAKS WD HDDs

2x DVD RW

MSI 9800 GT

2x 120mm case fans

and everything else I have in my sig?

I was reading the description and it says it only has one 12 volt rail.

The other PSU I was thinking about is this.

How much better is the PC Power and Cooling over the ThermalTake?

Thanks for you comments! :)

I suggest you take a look at this thread:

Silencer 500W is a decent PSU, but what is your budget really? For ~95$ you can get a VX550 which I would choose over the Silencer 500W.

As for the Purepower 500W don't get it, it's got a 14A plus a 15A 12v rail which is a pretty strange power distribution that you won't see in more modern PSU's (which indicates that this may be an old design). I wouldn't really use that for a Q6600 + 9800GT + 2x 640GB AAKS drives.

My budget is tight... I figured for ten more bucks I can get the PCP&C PSU and it would be worth it.

If I was just buying the PCU, I could see spending more money... but adding up all the parts is getting kinda expensive.

So should I NOT get the PCP&C PCU? If not, is there anything in that price range that's better?

Not really, if your budget is that tight, then out of the two you've provided I would go with the Silencer. TT Purepower's aren't really good PSU's. And you won't be handicapped by the 1 +12v rail either.

Aren't you using a 600W (as indicated in your sig?) which 600W is it? And why can't you upgrade your GPU + Hard Drives while keeping the 600W in your sig.

Go for the PC Power & Cooling Silencer the Thermaltake Purepower is old and has less efficiency.

or for a bit less SeaSonic S12 II 500W.

I thought PCP&C is better than all the others?

PC P&C used to be the ultimate PSU brand, but alot of other brands have caught up to them, mainly Seasonic type PSUs. I would recommend a Corsair or Seasonic also, as they are better for accoustics from my understanding.

I would personally go higher than 500W, let's say 550W or something, but I don't think you'll have a problem powering this system up with the PSU you have chosen, or any good PSU @ 500W.

Seasonic is really THE brand to choose right now, but their PSU's are pretty pricey; so in a sense it would be easier to buy a PSU that's OEM by Seasonic (Such as HX520, 620).

500 / 550W should be enough, seeing as how the most power hungry components are your CPU, GPU and hard drives.
