Samsung TV

Ok im new to the LCD TV stuff but I got myself a 40" HD TV the other day. Figured paying 1000$ extra AU for something that I wont notice to my eye isn't worth the money and when 1080p TV comes out ill have that 1000$ to spend on upgrading. anyways.....

the TV says the native resolution is 1368 x 768

the thing is my PS3 does 1080p on it, PS3 settings state this and the info button for the TV aswell (saying 1920 x 1080p).

another thing is that when i connect my macbook up from DVI > HDMI it sees it can only do 1080i which obviously its meant to do. but when I do 1080i without an option called overscan (which i think means; do not stretch the screen to fill it fully) it doesn't fit the whole screen there is a black boarder. My logic to this is that the TV is actually 1080p but the TV is telling the computer that its meant to be 1080i and so thats all it'll do unless I force it which is easier on windows to do than Mac.

I could get my desktop windows machine and test this to find out if that'll do 1080p but I really CBF moving it.

the TV is LA40A450C1D

Question I'm wondering is why is this TV doing 1080p and is they some kind of downscaling? Because I dunno whats the deal with it full HD and 1080p now and I thought I knew it.

BTW my definition of 1080p is a TV or screen that does 1920 x 1080.

Here is your television:

http://www.samsung.com/za/consumer/detail/...d=LA40A450C1XXA

Resolution 1,366 x 768

I don't believe the TV is capable of doing 1080p.

But it also says HD Ready Yes (1080 24p Real Movie ), i think that means it does 24 FPS. I think it may need some kind of separate HD box to view 1080.

Someone feel free to correct me if i'm wrong.

HD ready would just refer to the 1366x768 which is also considered HD. Typically they would say "Full HD" for a 1080p set.

Anway it's possible the TV is just down converting whatever the PS3 is putting out to given you obviously arent capable of displaying 1080 content.

Doesn't a HD tuner normally do all HD anyways, also TV here is only 1080i which the TV definitely does as thats how I watch it at now.

I'm still not understanding how the PS3 is doing 1080p though it. And the resolution can surpass 1,366 x 768 my guess is that is the native resolution so thats the best looks wise but the tv can actually output more that this if need be?!?

Smigit, so it is possible to have 1080p on a non native 1080p full HD TV and downscales that to 1080i? as that seems odd that it'd do that still.

when you connect a computer to an lcd, it's stupid to not use the native resolution. use 1360x768 when connected to a computer...

as for scaling, yes a 720p tv will scale down a 1080i signal, and won't accept 1080p signals.

but it is accepting 1080p signal on the PS3.

some conflicting answers here.

edit:. Actually maybe it can do 1080p. But you will need a tuner to do it.

In the USA, "HD Ready" refers to any display that is capable of accepting and displaying a high-definition signal at either 720p, 1080i or 1080p using a component video or digital input, and does not have a built-in HD-capable tuner.

It may be able to accept 1080p but it'll then downscale to 768p. The TV cannot make more pixels appear.

you will never get true 1080p on a 1366x768 res tv.

I agree logically, but why when I click the information button does it state 1920x1080p and then when its 720 its like 1240x720p.

seems stupid that it'd not state the highest res that it can actually process.

also if its doing that then its looking exactly the same as 1080p because I can fit just as much on the screen (if you get what I mean).

so what would be the actual difference if it was downscaling? (my logic says nothing would be different).
