Well chances are I'll be moving to the UK for a while. Anyhow question is, as a US citizen will I have any issues in regards to getting a job there? Haven't done any actual research into the subject yet as it is still a good while away but I am curious about it. I am guessing there are some sort of Work Visas I will have to get, or something to that extend? Anyone have prior experience with this?

pfft, why would you want to move here? :p

I think people who were born in the UK have a hard enough time getting a job themselves atm, eespecially with the recession lol.

what field were you thinking of getting into, the IT sector seems to be particularly hard atm, but i think trades such as electricians and plumbers are in needso you might possibly get lucky there.

Girlfriend is looking to finish her Masters Degree in London, after some encouragement from me to do it abroad. I'm a Programmer Analyst, however with all the people being laid off at my company my job has turned into doing everything, as of late I feel like a content manager...damn you stupid economy!

Depends entirely on what job you're going for. Stick with engineering and you should be okay.
Don't move here, it is ****.

Easy, easy.

Naturally, someones liking to a new country is down to them only, if you fully think and believe that Britain is wonderful then it will be. However, not many people do think that which is a tip that perhaps - it isn't so great. If you can, it'd be better to try and explore other countries and see how they compare and then make your decision :)

I think you all have a fundamental lack of understanding about the difficulties of procuring work permits in the UK. The work permit must first be sponsored by the employer while the employee is still abroad, before the employee can even apply for a work visa to come to the UK. Secondly, it is the employer's responsibility to prove that the job for which the employee is being sponsored cannot possibly be filled by ANY MEMBER OF THE EUROPEAN UNION (i.e. they have actively sought employees within the EU and come up empty-handed); in a recession, this is particularly difficult, since so many people are looking for work in any given sector. Therefore, such a job would have to be highly specialised/niche, or incredibly senior in terms of management responsibility, for a work permit to be feasible.

I'm not trying to shatter your dreams... I'm just saying you should research it a great deal beforehand and understand what your real options are, rather than blindly making the jump and hoping for the best. You may end up having to work under-the-table at less-than-desirable jobs if you do.

Not necessarily true, Depending on your skills there is point based systems as well.

anyway you will find it tough finding a job over here.

Are you skilled in any of the trades (plumber, joiner, etc)?

you need a VISA to work in Europe as a US citizen.

and at the moment it looks like getting a company to sponsor your VISA is as easy as it has always been for Europeans to get a VISA for working in the US.. which means you're probably not going anywhere man..

I hate to say it but if you have a good paying and stable job now I wouldn't even consider giving that up. In the movies I am sure that moving to England with your girl would turn out to be a grand adventure. In real life I think she should go to school here at the most inexpensive yet reputable university to save money. If she is actually going to have to pay for the tutition I would assume that the UK would be expensive with the value of the dollar right now.

Oh and by the way. If anyone breaks into your house there make sure you don't beat them up or you'll go to jail. http://rachellucas.com/index.php/category/...ain-surrenders/

dunno about finding work but I think you need a visa to work, and I think you need to work to get a visa :p

a 400K ? house is not a castle, 6 people sharing it sounds like not much more than acceptable to me.

and if they do work, it means they are legally in the country, hence pay their fair share of taxes, and are entitled to the same benefits.

I dont see a problem with all this, do you?

They were given the house to live in, they are not working LEGALLY, however they are working ILLEGALLY, they donot pay RENT, have a MORTGAGE nor do they pay utility rates such as WATER, GAS, ELECTRICITY it's all payed for by those of us that DO pay TAXES.

So yes, I do have an issue with this.

    • The GEEKOM A8 mini PC is 20% off (lower than Prime Day pricing) plus Huge Storewide Sale by Steven Parker GEEKOM is back with a deal on a variant of its A8 Mini PC powered by AMD's Ryzen 7 8945HS, which came out in 2024 with a TDP of just 45W, with a base clock of 3.8 GHz and a Turbo Boost of 4.9 GHz; although we never reviewed this variant, we did check out the Ryzen 9 version. As a reminder of what you get, below are the specifications for this Mini PC. GEEKOM A8 Dimensions 112.4 mm x 112.4 mm x 37 mm Weight 450g CPU Ryzen 7 8745HS (8 cores, 16 threads, 16MB L3 cache, 3.8 - 4.9 GHz, TDP: 45 W) cTDP: 35-54W (Default 45W) Graphics AMD Radeon™ 780M Graphics 12 RDNA 3 Graphics Cores 2700MHz 768 shading units / stream processors (12 CUs), 48 texture mapping units, and 32 ROPs NPU XDNA architecture (Up to 16 NPU TOPS) Memory 16GB Dual-channel Crucial DDR5-5600MT/s SODIMM (up to 64GB) Storage 1TB NVMe M.2 (PCIe Gen 4.0 x4) Operating System Windows 11 Pro Bluetooth Bluetooth v5.2 Wireless LAN Wi-Fi 6E Kensington Lock No SD Card reader Yes (left side) Adapter 120W, 6.32A, 19V Power Adapter Front I/O Ports 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A 1 x 3.5mm front stereo headset jack Rear I/O Ports 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A 1 x USB 4 Gen 3 Type-C with Power delivery up to 15W (5V 3A) 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C 1 x USB 2.0 Type-A 2 x HDMI 2.0b 1 x 2.5G RJ45 LAN 1 x DC-in Deal Price $519 (buying links below) GEEKOM has two configurations of the A8, with the only difference being the slightly less-powerful Ryzen 7 CPU with half the storage (1TB) and DDR5 memory (16GB). This knocks $350 off the price compared to the $999 Ryzen 9 configuration. In both instances, a Windows 11 Pro license is also pre-loaded. As I said previously, this appears to be an update on the A7 with the only difference being the newer CPU. The packaging has changed quite a bit from the A7. Instead of dark colors, now the box is completely white, and the foam cushion has been replaced by a cardboard mould that the A8 sits in, above a small envelope that contains a thank you card and booklet that has guidance on all of the controls, how to access the A8 to swap out the SSD or memory, and safety information in several European languages. Upon removing the cardboard mould, you can find another cardboard compartment that contains the power lead, HDMI cable, VESA plate, and a bag of screws. What’s In The Box 1 x A8 Mini PC 1 x Power Adapter 1 x HDMI Cable 1 x VESA plate and bag of screws 1 x Envelope with booklet and Thank you card Unlike the A7, the VESA mount option is back with the A8.
