Update: Black Mesa: Source

Recommended Posts

OK, so years ago stumbled across a site that was planning on recreating Half Life in the Source engine with new and updated graphics. I check on it from time to time. The last update I remember was a Christmas 2007 media release. I figured the project just kind of stalled and they had no more updates. I check this site about once a month maybe when I'm bored. I checked it tonight and see a Sep 22 update with updates going back 9 pages till the Christmas 2007 media release. They are all dated throughout the year! Did I miss something? Has anyone else checked the site this year and seen the updates as they get released? Am I going crazy?

The site is here, BTW: http://www.blackmesasource.com

Edit: I just thought I'd edit the title since the trailer is being discussed.

No Black Mesa in 2009 :(

From the website:

Cynics may now rejoice, bets may be collected, and I think a mod team member has to eat his shoe, but we hope our loyal fans will forgive us and realize that the delay will translate into a better final product that's (hopefully) more easily available to everyone."

Once again we apologize for what has to be very disappointing news. We placed a 2009 deadline on ourselves to motivate us and bring this 6 year project to a close. And while we didn't quite make it, we have come very close, and you can expect a complete, polished game to hit your hard drives in the near future. We'll be sure and update if anything changes. Until then, hang tight, it's coming!

They decided a while back to create a news page (Devblog) for the developers to show unfinished/unpolished stuff. The reason for this is that they can update the site a bit more than only use the front page. The front news page is for the official screenshot (polished and finished).

It feels like I checked that site just the other day and saw nothing since that Christmas '07 update. I guess, like someone said, they just decided to place news posted in the forums on their main site. Which is a novel idea, considering I, too, had just figured the project had been lost like so many mods before it.

Though I still feel that by the time this is released, it will be too dated to appreciate. The Source engine is way past its prime.

I had no idea a site like that exists. Do I have to buy the game to play the original Half Life when it is released?

You will need HL2 to play it. Maybe Episode One or Two, it will depends which version of the source engine they use.

You'll only need Episode One or Two if they use specific models from those games. You get the latest source engine with any source game. :)

I've already got Orange Box so I'm all set, when they release it that is :p .

Yeah, those updates must have been added recently because I keep checking up on the site every month or so and I'd not seem them before. I really like what they're doing but it's taking an incredibly long time. At least there's the Cinematic Mod to keep me entertained in the meantime - I downloaded it last night (6.5GB) and the textures look incredible, though I'm not sure all the models are actually improvements.

I don't understand how anybody can like fakefactory's stuff, the models look like crap, have issues and the textures are out of place and needlessly huge.

Anyway, Yeah, looks like they integrated the DevBlog with the main site. Personally I'm sick of waiting for this mod, it's been years and years, I remember reading about this before I even bought HL2.

tell me about it, i'm still waiting for the Enterprise mod for HL2, and the Stargate Special Unit mod for UT2003 has become a joke, they promised a beta over a year ago...

It seems a lot of these cool looking mods get half done and then turn to dust.

reallllly looking forward to this actually. I really woudln't be surprised if the entire team gets bought out by Valve similar to a few other mods. It seems just the sort of title Valve could do well packaging with Episode 3 or a future title and would mean it could see the light of day on the XBox also.

I personally can't wait for this. This is going to be really awesome. This is going to be a Valve quality title, except it's not going to be made by Valve. The guys really seem like they know what they're doing, so I have a lot of faith in them. Lets hope this gets released before HL3.

    • Same Internet Archive seemed to grab the new version https://web.archive.org/web/20...d/Setup_MakeMKV_v1.18.4.exe Here's the link to an additional file it periodically downloads https://web.archive.org/web/20260213092148/https://www.makemkv.com/sdf.bin I think update's keys, etc. To manually trigger this update, put the sdf.bin file in the root of where the program is installed. When you launch the program it will pick up the file and import it. Typically put it here: C:\Program Files (x86)\MakeMKV\sdf.bin
    • Windows 11 KB5094126, KB5093998 bugging out Office apps but it may not be Microsoft's fault by Sayan Sen Microsoft last week released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. Although the tech giant did not acknowledge any major problems, some users online reported various issues ranging from OneDrive and Dropbox access problems, BitLocker recovery lockouts, to blue screens and BSODs. You can read about them in this dedicated piece. While there is still no confirmation about those problems from Microsoft the company has admitted to another bug which we did not report on. The tech giant has confirmed it has received reports of an issue in which certain third-party applications may be unable to launch Microsoft Office apps or open Office documents after installing the Patch Tuesday. This affects both Windows 11 as well as Windows 10. The company says the problem impacts a subset of applications that rely on OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) automation to communicate with Microsoft Office programs. According to Microsoft, affected scenarios involve third-party software attempting to open Office applications or documents from within their own interface. In such cases, the Office program may fail to launch altogether, or the requested document may not open. Oddly there may not be any error message, which probably makes the issue difficult to diagnose. The bug affects several Office products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other apps in the Microsoft Office suite when they are launched through the affected software. These include tax and accounting software such as CCH Engagement and Workpaper Manager, dental practice management solutions like Dentrix and Softdent, as well as the popular research and reference management tool Zotero. Microsoft adds that other applications using similar Office integration methods could also experience the same problematic behavior. To understand the issue it is important to look at OLE, the Microsoft technology involved. OLE allows different applications to work together and share data, while its Automation feature lets one program control another. Thus this enables third-party software to launch Microsoft Office apps, open documents, and perform tasks automatically without requiring users to switch between programs. Because many accounting, healthcare, research, and business applications rely on OLE automation to interact with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office apps, any disruption can break those workflows. As a result, affected software may be unable to open Office documents or launch Office applications even though the programs themselves continue to work normally. At the moment the company has not provided a permanent fix though it has confirmed that engineers are actively working on a resolution, which will be delivered through a future Windows update. As such additional details will be shared once more information becomes available. In the meantime, Microsoft recommends a simple workaround for affected users whic is to open the Office application or document directly rather than launching it through the third-party program. For enterprise customers and organizations managing larger deployments, Microsoft says an additional mitigation is available. Admins experiencing the problem on their managed devices are advised to contact Microsoft Support for business to obtain and apply the workaround.
