Radeon HD 4850 temp threshold

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been playing a lot of COD4 (great game), but I've been getting a lot of ATI driver crashes as well during gameplay. I figure the card is getting too hot, and when I check the CCC, I find the card's temp is at 98C under the load of COD4! I already have the fan speed maxed out at 100%, so I'm wondering what the 4850's threshold is for temperature before I should start worrying about it crapping out on me. Thanks.

That's definitely on the extreme high end of what I've seen as far as temps go for these cards. I'd make sure you're getting enough airflow to the card, i don't think it should "that" hot, especially if you have the fans set to 100%.

Mine is a Sapphire 4850, before I swapped my CPU fan out for an Freezer7 it was running about 90?c and I was getting some driver crashes, now, it's running about 60?c load.

I think your case just isnt up to the challenge of cooling something like this, You really need something with Rear and Front case fans.

That does seem very hot at full load with 100% fan speed, if I was you I would be looking at imroving your airflow if possible, and if thats not a problem then try removing the heatsink and reapplying the thermal paste with some new, and failing that just get it returned and replaced.

For reference both my 4850's in crossfire (1.2v bios volt mod) idle at about 48oc and load at about 78oc with the fans at 40%, admittedly my airflow is good, but you shouldnt be looking too much higher than that I shouldnt think.

Well duh. What you are doing is like putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound. Why not fix the problem before the card burns up?

As in buying a new case? Don't have the time or the money. A quick fix is still better than leaving it to fry. Blowing a small fan inside the case to cool it down by 10 degrees or so is fine for now. Odd thing is, the card never got this hot before, with the same type of airflow. I could've left the fan at 65% and the card would be around 45C idle. Now, it's around 60C idle with the fan at 100%.

If that is the case, I would return the card and get another one. Sure, your airflow isn't great, but if you didn't change anything, and all of a sudden the temperature is up 15C at idle, I am inclined to believe there is a problem. I would return it just to be safe.
