Yusuf M. Veteran Posted October 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 10, 2008 (edited) Buy a ZOTAC 9600GT for $94.99 at newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814500019 The price comes down to $69.99 after a $25 mail-in rebate. capr
that was a nice video card back in the day... if you had the 7900 i would say no... but i think you shoudl go with a nvidia 9800 for now. your system will hold the card back but the benefit to that is if you decide to upgrade your whole system next month, you can use this 9800 in the new system and have some sweet gaming going.... if you are sure you won't need the little future that the 9800 offers then the nvidia 8800 series should be a good place to settle. they are very good stable cards and if you decide to over clock them, they can almost match the performance of the 9800. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted October 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 10, 2008 You're welcome. I strongly suggest that you take my recommendation into consideration. Anything more powerful and you'd risk using an "under-performing" video card. After all, your Intel C2D E4300 @ 1.8 GHz w/ 2MB cache isn't that fast. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted October 10, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 10, 2008 yeap that's my fear... buy something that can't perform at the maximum cause the other components :p Yeah, it's unfortunate. You should be alright with what I recommended. It's a fairly decent video card and it should perform well with current games. A friend of mine has it and he's quite happy. I just need to check cause for me its a little hard to buy the things and more to reclaim the rebates :( , cause I live in Mexico, so a cousin thats lives in USA buy me the items from new egg, and i would have to give him more job with the rebate issue hehe... but thats another story  Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/680664-change-or-not-to-change-my-vid-card/#findComment-589946860 Share on other sites
capr
yeah.... looking at the 9600 suggestion you really can't beat that price. i have no idea why it's that cheap, but for $65 you can't get anything better and even if you could, it would be too much for you. +shift. MVC Posted October 11, 2008 MVC Share Posted October 11, 2008 Take a look at ATI/nVidia's midrange options right now, 9600GT or equivalent then. gummyz
What resolution do you play games at? Almost every game will run @ 1280x1024 with a 9600GT/9600GSO/4650/4670/3850/3870 (these should all be under 110US). If you need a little more performance, look at the 9800GT/9800GTX/8800GT/4850/4870. If you want to play games with HDR/AA/AF, you'll want a powerful video card, since the CPU generally doesn't matter in these situations. Yusuf M. Veteran Posted October 11, 2008 Veteran Share Posted October 11, 2008 The GeForce 9600 GT will rip through games @ 1440x900. Did you know? The number of distinct pixels in a 1280x1024 monitor is more than that of a 1440x900 monitor. So, that's less work for your video card and more FPS in your games since you'll be playing them at your monitor's native resolution. You said you live in Mexico and newegg only ships to the US (ouch!). It wasn't until recently that Canada got their own newegg website. Unfortunately, the prices aren't as good as the US version. gummyz
I think newegg.ca just adjusts prices according to the CA dollar, though don't quote me on it. I keep seeing my CPU price going up as I haven't checked out my order yet (and this coincides a little with the loonie dropping in value). Anyhow, I really love my 9600GT. I would recommend for you to go higher but you probably don't need the speed, just the ability to play your games at decent levels of graphics with good performance. Hope you can find one at a decent price. I hope you've got a decent PSU already. The 9600GT doesn't take up alot of power though, so that's the good news. RAID 0
I wouldn't waste my money on the 9600 GT. For only like.. what... 30-40 more bucks, you can get the 9800 which beats the 9600 hands down. If you're looking for more speed, save the money and get the card you really want. Yeah, it might take a week or two longer, but IMHO would be so worth the wait. That's what I'm doing now; saving longer for better parts. As a side note, for $179 right now on Newegg you can get the Q6600. That CPU matched with a nice 9800GT would be a great improvement in many areas of your computer.
