Thinking of getting an iPod - need help

Recommended Posts

OK, I am due an upgrade, am an O2 Select customer, and looking at MAYBE getting an iPhone.

I currently use my SE k850i for:

* Calling

* Texting

* Photos

* Web browsing (facebook and hotmail)

* Alarm clock

* As a model to allow my laptop to pickup the 3g connection

I like the fact that I need to charge it pretty infrequently.

I am looking towards the iPhone for:

* GPS

* Better diary management and syncing

* Am keen to look at developing on the platform

* Homebrew (emulators, etc)

Now, I am aware that the camera on the iPhone is basically a joke (having seen others shots), but can possibly live with that.

But I have been told that I cannot use it as I use my current phone - to allow me web access on my laptop.

Is this true?

Alternatives I am looking at are:

* Sony Ericsson C905 (when out)

* O2 XDA Flex (when out)

But I have been told that I cannot use it as I use my current phone - to allow me web access on my laptop.

Is this true?

Sorry i can't be of more help but this quote is indeed true, there was an app released for it but apple quickly pulled it from the app store

Well that sucks. What other mobile phone, with bluetooth and 3g would disable such a feature!?

Then again, I wonder whether I need the same level of access if I were able to use my iPod instead of the laptop...

imo just go for new HTC Touch series phone or something offers same sometimes better features etc like Touch HD since your in europe you maybe able to get your hands on one and has all the features of iphone but better and winmo 6.1 so not locked to apples software development cycle.

I have ipod touch but it's really not something you'd wanna replace a laptop with...

Well not replace - but I use my laptop at work when skiving to check facebook - so...

And yeah agreed HTC devices are great, but I just feel there is a lacking community. I fancy some iPhone development, cos it looks damned simple.

ah ok well in that case if you want something for casual browsing and music or videos then it'd do well but yeah i'd definitely not buy one if your after something that has features like phones do like alot of apps you see that are aimed at social networking/interaction are aimed at iphone with it's gps and things which are rendered practically useless on the ipod touch so even the development is limited to pretty much the internet and accelerometer in terms of special development features/abilities.

But for facebook and myspace mobile apps and stuff the apps seem to be good for that use and music and videos pictures etc are pretty fun to play with and some other stuff you may find with obvious jailbreaking but i'm no pro with that stuff and since the 2.0.x release i tried jailbreaking once but seemed very limited and most jailbreak apps and whatnot are still for 1.1.x firmware and stuff so yeah.

O2 wont care that you are an existing customer if you go for an iPhone, they can't offer you any better deals on it at the moment. Somebody that works for O2 posted on another forum that they will be able to offer better deals starting some time next month though. It doesn't sound like you really want the iPhone now, but figured it might be worth knowing anyway.

I'm on O2 and looking to upgrade too. Was offered O2 Ignito (O2's version of the HTC Touch Diamond) 600mins, Unlimited Texts and Unlimited Web for 20 quid a month which was pretty good but I'm going to hold out another week or so until new phones come out and try for a better deal.

Also, if you're looking for GPS in a phone, might wanna forget it. I've heard GPS times are a joke

I have used GPS on a previous phone quite hapilly.

I am also considering the Xperia...

But thinking c905 would be fine. I can never quite say that I "like" WinMo

Can you possibly link to that tariff?

It isn't online, it's a work around by saying that Vodaphone offer the same deal...which they do but it's just a lot of hastle to get.

I was offered the deal and seems quite a few others were as well: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpo...p;postcount=885

Don't go for an offer on their website if you are already an existing customer, call up their cancellations department from your phone (202). Your 'loyalty points' will depend somewhat on your past bill costs, promptness of paying them etc but it's worth a shot.

My bills are usually in the ?100 region, I am an "O2 Select" customer, I have an issue dealt with specifically by their CEO. I will milk this.

Thanks for the link:))

No problem. You should be in line for a good upgrade then.

The iPhone doesn't have GPS, just to clarify.

Triangulating your mobile signal isn't GPS, much less accurate.

Also, if you're looking for GPS in a phone, might wanna forget it. I've heard GPS times are a joke (and I got fed up with waiting on this N95 8GB).

The iPhone 3G has a GPS receiver. It also uses cell triangulation to help strengthen the signal in areas of poor GPS coverage.

The iPhone 3G has A-GPS, which means it uses a mix of GPS and cell phone triangulation to get the best coverage. My dad got an iPhone 3G yesterday and it tracked us near-perfectly down the motorway (sometimes we went off the road), but a lack of direction readout and the fact that the screen turns off when it's inactive means it works better when you're walking somewhere.

    • Kind of glad I upgraded to S26 Ultra 1TB this year, with trade-in and discounts it cost me €1199, that's only €119 more than the S23 Ultra (256 GB) cost me. Last time I bought it via my phone provider outright with committing to two years, now via Samsung.com I reckon the S27 series will be more expensive too.

    • I cannot believe this is a news post from Neowin. This should be embarassing, coming from a "senior editor". Is it your first day using Windows?! Maybe it's time to find a new Windows news site.
