The 28 Best FPS Games

Good list, bad ranking.

How the hell can RTCW be placed before Turok? RTCW should have been in the top 10 at least.

I saw RTCW, Then Tribes 2, and said Oh Hell No, and stopped reading. LOL

And I just read the rest of the list, good games, but some glaring exclusions IMO, and the ordering is all, all wrong.

Good list, bad ranking.

How the hell is RTCW not in the top 10? That's BS. Halo 3? Please... are they trying to boost sales of this game?

Why the hell would one of THE most successful titles in the history of video games need its sales boosted? Is it not at all possible that there is a world outside your own head and that just MAYBE there are people in that world with a differing taste to yours?

Hell I am seriously under the impression that Bungie has personally beaten up and stolen the lunch money off 60% of the gaming community, it is the only logical explanation for the excruciating hate the Halo franchise gets /sarcasm

Neither game is sacred to me and I certainly wasn't getting personal

It just seems whenever a list like this comes up it's always "wrong" and you know the only correct list. Just gets a little tiring to read once you keep hearing "HL2/SS2 > everything!"

I love the games just as much but jesus christ...

edit: you never hurt my feelings either, I hope I didn't do the same to you :) :p

It's all good pal (Y)

Halo doesn't belong on the the top 25?

Explain using logic why it shouldn't be? And others on that list should.

Because, in my opinion (;)) no Halo game has added something meaningful to the genere. They can be fun in multiplayer, I know that, but I simply cant see their appeal besides beign the first successful FPS franchise in the recent console generations.

For me is just a remake of a former bungie title, Marathon.

This. I still consider Halo: CE one of the greatest shooters I have ever played. But when I saw this topic I figured it was going to be games that did something amazing for the genre, set standards that FPS have since adapted in there own way, etc. Not just make sale records.

Why on Earth is AVP2 on that list? The original AVP is a vastly superior game. The list gets HL2 right but some of the other choices are a bit strange.

My list would have gone something like this:

1) Half-Life 2

2) Team Fortress 2

3) Unreal Tournament

4) Quake II

5) Tribes 2

6) Far Cry

7) STALKER

8) Aliens Versus Predator

9) Bioshock

10) Doom II

11) Star Trek: Elite Force

Exactly. Im not trying to bash any games, all of those games on the list are fun, but I dont think most of them are groundbreaking.

To be honest I think what it comes down to is everybody expects Halo to stand up to PC gaming masterpieces (Half Life etc) and resent it for not living up to their Godly standards forgetting that Halo is revolutionary for a console game and has NOTHING on PC shooters, it has undeniably tight and very functional controls, slightly better then "ok" visuals nothing amazing, engaging story(many do not know the backdrop so this is debatable) one of THE most polished and refined multiplayer experiences and community support LIKE NO OTHER.

So tell me this game does NOT belong on that list? AT ALL?

It would be unfair not to consider it, but according to the standards you mention (wich are very valid by the way) then it must be below of the likes of Golden Eye, Perfect Dark and Turok since those games stablished FPS credibility on consoles, I think.

+1, I found Halo CE much better than the Halo 3 compaign. If they redid Halo CE in Halo 3 graphics, I would come :p

Riddick should be much higher if you ask me, that game is amazing, reminds me of bioshock in some ways. I really need to play that again but i havent got an xbox1 anymore. i cant wait for the remake :D

Unreal 1 and goldeneye should be higher too, still both the funnest FPS games if you ask me

I kind of agree HL2 being at #1 though

Halo 2 for what it did to MP on console's yes. Halo 3 no.

Sorry in advance for this slightly off-topic comment / question:

I've played Half-Life 2 from start to finish, including Episode 1 & 2....so, can someone please tell me where this

is in the game?

It's a very early screen shot shown 12 to 18 months or so before Half Life 2 came out. It was a water based enemy named the Hydra which was cut from the gamebecause while it looked cool to see other enemies get attacked by it, as soon as it attacked you it was just plain aqward and didn't work.
LOl on that list, makes me laugh abit. First..what's with the Counter Strike Source picture, Looks like it was taken from Counter-Strike: Condition Zero

Where the hell is Doom? One game that is on every list!

That's because the screenshot is from CS 1.6 and not Source lol.

I agree, Doom should have been on the list and Quake II should have been a bit higher up. The ranking of the games, and some of the choices are just...odd. First off, I played GoldenEye quite a bit, and while it was a good game, I don't see why everyone calls it the best console FPS ever and praise it so much. It wasn't "that" good imo. But to each his own. Like they say in the Gamepro article "GoldenEye had a winning formula on all fronts that has yet to be matched by any other FPS" - uh, what? lol

    • I don’t get why if I bought the game on the last get I needed to pay $40 to upgrade to the new version in the first place and people who love the game and play a lot would have upgraded already so this is just PR and a chance to grab new players who forgot the game long time ago I think
    • The term "use" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in that headline. "Use" can mean opening ChatGPT occasionally to ask for the definition of a word or information about a specific topic. If you frame the question around how many people use it as a daily driver in their work or personal lives, that number is a lot smaller. Those are the people who pay for AI. Nearly everyone else is happy to use it for free, but doesn't see enough value in it to pay for it.
    • No support for Windows Hello!
    • I think you meant the "ntfs3" driver, but yes there have been a lot of fixes for it in this release and previous releases, not 100% sure if the issue you mentioned is fixed though. In any case, the new "ntfs" driver in 7.1 doesn't have that issue (at least, no reports of such have come thru), but your kernel needs to explicitly enable support for the new driver first (like how CachyOS kernel has it), and you need to edit your mount points in /etc/fstab to use "ntfs" instead of the other drivers.
    • Epic Games says Unreal Engine 6 will help developers "build content faster" using AI models by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Epic Games is rolling out the latest major update to Unreal Engine 5 today, and at the same time, the company also dropped some information on the next-generation version of the product, Unreal Engine 6. This was already revealed a few weeks ago alongside the new Rocket League upgrade reveal. The company says it is combining the features of Unreal Engine and Unreal Editor for Fortnite to create this new version of its popular media creation tool. On top of creating entire games, the new engine will also focus on letting developers operate large-scale live service titles more easily, whether by shipping content into their own ecosystems or into Fortnite. The use of large language models is also mentioned here, with Epic saying it will be a core part of the engine. "We see LLMs, generative AI models, and tools like Claude and Codex playing a central role in helping you build content faster while maintaining the creative control you need," adds the company. Here is the rundown of what's new about version 6 of Unreal Engine: With all these changes to the programming model, portability upgrades, and generative AI integration, Epic says the new version of the engine will "change a lot about how games are made." The company aims to ship Unreal Engine 6 into early access in late 2027, with a full release planned for 12-18 months later. Epic Games also dropped a lengthy blog post about the new Unreal Engine 5.8 update for game developers over here. The release is focused on delivering better performance, customization, and streamlined workflows for development teams. This will be the final major update for this version of the engine before Epic switches to focus fully on Unreal Engine 6's early access launch.
