thx guys

Go to the following

Start / Run > mmc

File / Add - Remove Snap-in

add the Group Policy Editor, and comfirm for local settings.

Next got to

User Configuration / Administrative Templates / Network / Network Connections, there change the setting for "Prohibit viewing status for an active connection."

Determines whether users can view the status for an active connection.

Connection status is available from the connection status taskbar icon or from the Status dialog box. The Status dialog box displays information about the connection and its activity. It also provides buttons to disconnect and to configure the properties of the connection.

If you enable this setting, the connection status taskbar icon and Status dialog box are not available to users (including administrators). The Status option is disabled in the context menu for the connection and on the File menu in the Network Connections folder. Users cannot choose to show the connection icon in the taskbar from the Connection Properties dialog box.

Important: If the "Enable Network Connections settings for Administrators" is disabled or not configured, this setting will not apply to administrators on post-Windows 2000 computers.

If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the connection status taskbar icon and  Status dialog box are available to all users.

looked interesting.. 'cept i don't seem to have a "group policy editor," but oh well.. (i prolly did something wrong somehow) i just wait for the little window to disappear when the card's enabled..:

Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click for properties on your connection -> Uncheck the 'Show icon in notification area when connected'

Hope it helps!

that only works when the connection has something plugged into it as stated before....

i found out that if your delete the resource of an MS program, it will work but not display the resource! i've deleted IE's and explorer's menus, the throbbers, etc. try reshacking %windir%\system32\netshell.dll and deleting icon #195 ;) i hope this helped and im not responsible if you f*ck up your network :)

Try this;

How to Disable Media Sense for TCP/IP in Windows

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=239924

You will still get the icon if the cable is removed - but this should prevent windows knowing if the line is active or not - and therefore not tell you that the other machine is no longer there.

I guess people just do not understand the question/problem - He does not want to see when the other machine is disconnected. So I am guessing they are using a crossover cable - since if they were both connected to a hub/switch. This would not be an issue.

When his bro shuts down his machine. He sees the network not available icon in his systray (computer with red X). This is NOT the network available icon, which can be turned off by saying you do not want to see the icon when connected, etc..

The correct way to get what you want is to disable the media sense option - I gave link to Q article in previous post. This way your machine can not tell you the network is not available. And there it will not show you that network not available icon in your systray.

they dont get it because they dont read his problem carefully...

and for those who say "you can disable the connection if you dont want to see the icon":

what's the point of that? what if the person on the other side turn on the PC again? maybe he will be trying to message you,to send you something with no succes because of disabled connnction. So he will have to come into your room (or get dressed and come to you at 1:00am because he lives in opposite house) just to tell you "enable the connection because i wanna play Quake 3 with you"

Kinda LAME,isnt it?! THINK before you post please...

do what was above said..

Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Right click for properties on your connection -> Uncheck the 'Show icon in notification area when connected'

since you dont want it disabled, just want not to be able to see it!

he's talking about a LAN connection, when an ethernet cable is unplugged it will show the messege after using your tip too ;) try reshacking it d00d!!!

    • There is a lot of reasons not to use Edge but faster fixes and security updates is not one of them.
    • Can't reproduce. I installed Edge, went to neowin.net > accepted the cookie consent > used menu to go to forums, everything loads and I can browse around the forums. If you can't interact with the dialog on the forums for some reason, go to the main site and accept the cookie consent there? It is true that the site will not function properly until the cookie consent is accepted or rejected,. it's a legal requirement and I also know that certain VPN/ad blockers block it, which is a user related issue and not a neowin.net problem.   This is not our cookie consent dialog. Gotta love browser hijacking... /s Edit: this may be what Californians see, I will confirm with our consent provider.
