I've had the benefit of having relatively stable internet 24/7 for about 2 years or so now since I've gotten ADSL internet from Telus.

Now there's a problem that has seemed to surface in the past week or so. I've noticed that on my laptop running Windows Vista, the internet connection would go from "My network name" Local and Internet to just only Local. Now, during this time; I go ahead and check my other computers (two Windows XP desktops and my mom'sWindows 2000 desktop), and they are unable to access the internet as well. Just wanted some information as to what my problem is, and if I've left out any information let me know and I'll try to answer ASAP.

Router model is D-Link DI-524 Revision E3. ADSL Router is a D-Link DSL-300G. The network is using WEP encryption (yes, I know, but it can't be helped...I have a wireless B computer in the network).

The problem seems to have surfaced about 5-7 days ago, and since then I've had to do at least a daily power cycle on my router (and even that doesn't always fix the problem). I would usually be without internet upwards of 45 minutes to an hour. Usually after no more than 7-8 power cycles (that can't be good for the router) the internet seems to come back (until the next day).

I'm at my witts end here, so if anyone has any input that would be greatly appreciated.

So are you computer changing over to a 169.254 address? Sounds like a dhcp issue if they are, just make them static IPs

Not sure about that, I will check next time this happens. Problem is I've already got every computer in our house assigned to a static IP (private IP range 192.168.0.100-104), and I've set it so that DHCP only assigns dynamic IP's from 192.168.0.105-192.168.0.199.

Here's a copy and paste from my router. Minus the MAC address.

Static DHCP Client List 5 / 32 ( Number / Total )

Host Name IP Address MAC Address

Is this what you're referring to BudMan? And how would I check if my computer has changed to a 169.254 address?

That is not a static ip, that is a reservation to always give the same IP to the same mac. Not sure where they came up with the static dhcp term -- since its not the correct use of the terms.. Its a RESERVATION to give a specific client the ip is all.. its not a static anything ;)

when it happens again -- look at your clients IPconfig.. if its showing an IP of 169.254 it lost its lease and could not get an IP, so it just made one up APIPA. from a command prompt type ipconfig /all and you will get lots of info.. example

C:\>ipconfig /all

Set the IP at the host, ie do not use dhcp and see if you can then ping your router, etc.

Thanks for clearing that up, I will check if the IP is 169.254 next time my DHCP has problems again.

Is this what you mean by setting a Static IP?

If so, what do I put in the text boxes? I don't think my ISP has provided me with that information.

    • You might want to update to 1TB drive.  They are not very expensive these days, there are plenty of options - simple look I would think you could find a 1TB ssd or even nvme somewhere between 50 and 100 bucks. when I have moved to larger ssds in laptop in the past, you can just connect the drive via usb - image.  Then take the old drive out, put in the new drive and there you go..  If your concerned about how much space you have left this prob your best bet..
    • I see! Wasn’t aware of that. Even though they started off with desktop app for Mac before Windows. Should be on it’s way soon! 🤞
