Is it possible to install Shift from HD?

Recommended Posts

So I would like to try Shift on my laptop (HP 6735s) and I'm wondering if it's possible to install Shift directly from HD? And is it Shift based as LiveCD only or it would work like ubuntu or fedora? (when it comes to bugs)

Also dualboot with Vista shouldn't be a problem, or is it?

Thank you,

Rocky

The only way I think it could be done is to mount the iso image with a Windows tool like Daemon Tools. Then do a "wubi" install.

I have never used wubi, as I am a 100% *nixer, so an install in Windows is something I have never done.

But it might be possible.

Thank you markjensen for wubi tip :pc: I'll try it and report back and maybe write "how to" for it.

Are there any bugs using it on laptops? With wifi and such? If I will get used to it I would like to use it as my primary OS.

After googling for wubi I've found out that wubi is for Ubuntu only. Then I found unetbootin and I've installed Shift but after it should load up it stops at /etc/rc.local

Everything before was [OK] with no erros. I don't know what is wrong, I will have to wait and install it using CD exept if anyone has other sugestion?

You could uncompress the filesystem onto the harddrive. I haven't tried this at all, it's just an idea. You would need to be on Linux and run unsquashfs of filesystem.squashfs on the ISO. It's in one of those folders on there. Unetbootin worked for me when making an Ubuntu 8.10 flash drive.

Ok today I had the time to play with Shift but it stops at the beginning. When the startup screen comes up it doesn't matter wich option I just nothing hapens. All I get is black screen with blinking cursor. I've tried with OEM install function but it's the same. I've checked DVD and everything was [OK].

I would like to have dualboot with Vista if that makes any difference. I have three partitions, one for Vista, one for Linux(if I could install it) and one without OS (for data -swap).

Any help?

*EDIT*

I've tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but it doesn't help. Well, I really don't know if this is console in wich I can type but ctrl+c doesn't do nothing. I've found out that this problem is coused by graphic cards, mine is onboard HD3200 ATI if anyone had this problem ?

Shift is based off of Ubuntu, so it should work!

We'd need to ship our own Wubi with custom md5 hashes of our ISO, so when Wubi verifies the contents of the ISO it knows a Shift ISO is valid. However, I doubt it would work with the 8.10 version of Wubi.

    • Since they open sourced the calculator in Win 10/11 it is much better and can do a lot, I love it.
    • That's just silly imo. The lengths that man goes to just to avoid W11 is just nuts. Very, very few home users would do that. I will say this though, he is committed. Btw, I note on askwoody that Woody Leonhard passed away March, 2025 aged 73. His site was one of my favorites back in the day. Belated yes but RIP Woody.
    • Because of the EU (a good thing) newer android devices been getting 5 years worth of security patches. Except some Motorola which found the loop hole, and offer ZERO updates. In addition, Google for years have been making where it can patch some stuff by updating the core Google Play Store itself.  As echoed earlier,  you take the security risk in to your own hand beyond supported.
