I really love the watercolor, .net and longhorn themes, but I'd really like to see a theme like the old beta 1 whistler, the one with the while and blue background arcing with the 4 or 5 large icons on the desktop? Anyone remember this...or care to attempt to make one?

I believe it was build 2257...sorry I don't have a pic, but if you go to www.wincustomize.com under desktopX themes there are a few of them.

i think i'll continue my trend of informative link lovin with this reply...

so buckle up, grab some coffee (not in that order, could prove dangerous) and get ready to learn something today...

alright, a couple things stand out about your request, and i'll try and be as chronological about this as i can.

alright, background first. the white and blue desktop pane with the icons set into the wallpaper, all very nice and pretty-like. this is i believe what you're speaking of, and you're close in saying it came in an early build of whistler...but not 2257, this was from 2250, 2257 did away with this, even though you could do the same thing with just making a webpage, having the arc as the background, table for the buttons, give the buttons images and links, embed that as your desktop using active desktop, and viola (sp?) desktop pane.

now, that really doesn't warrant an all out new msstyle, unless you want to try and go for the coloring of the 2250 professional theme, which isn't too far a cry from professional/whistler/watercolor as it is; just with a few minor changes. aside from the 2250 start panel which CAN be done, with changes mind you...and this last pic gives you a good rundown on what 2250 looked like from a style perspective...not too much to write home to mom about, but still, doable.

now, beta 1 on the other hand, is a whole 'nother beast. one with very large teeth. and a towel. and 3 midgets on leashes that snap at you when you get too near.

as you can see

here, here and here the only thing that really set beta1 apart from professional/whistler/watercolor styles that are out on the market now is the startpanel, which, unfortunately, can not have the username down the left-hand side such as it is in the last "informative link." but certainly, something similar could be done by one of the stylists around here to get a similar startpanel...there's in fact an objectbar panel that comes quite close to the beta1 startpanel here. download for that is here.

:old:

I wonder if Microsoft is paying attention to this, this contrast here is amazing, I mean the bulk of people and it is a general statement but reasonable, many many people are using the watercolor and Longhorn/.NET Themes, I mean there you have the past with Whistler and the Future with Longhorn.

Its quite the contrast.

Is anyone actually happy with the present XP MS standard Lunar ones, considering people would rather use past styles such as whistler?

Don't get me wrong, but I like the luna style, just not as good as I thought I would when uncle Bill first unveiled it. It's just getting too bubbly and happy for me...I don't know this is just my opinion, but I just don't think that a lot of these "roundish" themes are good for anyone except 1st time users, and then the wow wears off pretty soon. That's why I like the older builds, true it's not too far removed from Win9X desktop, but on build 2250 having your my computer and recent docs right on the desktop, now that was useful.

But that's just my opinion :D

I definately prefer the whistler look as compared to the luna look. I used to sometimes switch back to the luna skin from the whistler skin just for a change but since binary released his whistler skin with the olive green and silver i've got no need for luna....if i get bored of my whistler skin i just change the color.

    • You are clueless. The updates are done in the background so the next time you open Edge the updates are applied automatically. There is no need to close all your tabs. Just keep browsing like you normally do. Clearly you don't use Edge and are just one of those haters that complain for the sake of complaining.
    • I don't get this David. Can you explain it please.
    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
