Upgrade or Clean Install?

I've purchased a new system that ships with Vista Premium 64 bit installed. I am a Microsoft Partner and have a Vista Ultimate 64 bit disk, and intend to upgrade the new PC once it arrives. I've always been an advocate of clean installs as opposed to upgrades, but since this is nothing more than a version upgrade I'm wondering if there really is any reason not to do an in-place upgrade of the OS.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually done an upgrade from one version of Vista to another to hear if there were any issues after the fact. Thanks very much in advance.

As long as there is no crap-ware on the computer preinstalled then I would just use the upgrade function. I haven't personally upgraded but know of a few people who have and have had no problems created by the upgrade process.

I'd go with a clean install, if at all possible. That will keep any older issues or problems from migrating forward. Just back up your old stuff because a clean install wipes out everything.

Barney - thanks - I appreciate the response and as I said I've always advocated clean installs. Still, I would like to hear from someone who has done a Version upgrade if possible.

If your computer comes filled with c**pware then deffo a fresh install, if not an upgrade will be fine and its also quicker.

It is a clean system, it's brand new!!!

I have done few of these and all I've done first is clear off any unnecessary crap that the supplier may have installed and have not had any problems with the upgrades! My experience has been good so far!

Look folks, I appreciate the comments but all I'm asking is to hear from someone who has done and in-place Vista upgrade. I understand the advantages of a clean install - that is NOT what I'm asking. Thank you.

I've done an upgrade from Premium to Ultimate on a new HP notebook and I'd recommend a fresh install. It took four hours to do the upgrade and it never felt quite right afterwards.

Based on personal experience, do a fresh install.

If I remember right, it also wastes a lot of disk space storing old files in case you ever want to un-upgrade.
