My Neowin subscriber experience

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

Just thought i'd post my experience since becoming a neowin subscriber. Hopefully more will be encouraged by it and (re)subscribe themselves.

I joined neowin 5 years ago, September 2003 i think. If i remember rightly, i joined after being posted the url to some news item or forum post, that i found (mostly likely) compelling enough to want to read more of the website. I did just that, and soon found myself joining the forums, laughing, crying at various posts, and finding resourceful help and in turn offering my own advice on various technical (and sometimes non technical) affairs.

I always "wanted" to subscribe, but always "forgot" or had better things to spend my 8GBP (10EUR/12USD). Then one night, last week, spontaneously after reading the same kind of random article that drew me in way back when, i pulled out my card, and off i went to NoChex.

What did that cash buy me? Was it worth it?

Well... it got me my own blogspace (no big deal to some, maybe... myself included, but nevertheless blogging on neowin attracts many views, populating the site) hilariously random subscriber forum, and a nice touch (although possibly expected) email from Daniel thanking me for contributing and asking me for my username to finish things off.

I get my orange name and the + prefixing it, declaring me as someone who cares enough about this site to want to contribute in the best way possible, showing my commitment to the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.

And it was worth it because.. for as long as people like me who are "ordinary", not "associated" with any staffers, feel compelled to help out in the way neowin needs it most.

IT's ony been a week, but i find myself more active too.. Not posting maybe, but browsing forums i'd have otherwise previously ignored. Contributing has made me feel more involved in a site i already used daily.

Thankyou neowin for your long years of dedicated amusement and serious IT info, i'll mostly certainly subscrube again

I have noticed a lot of colourful nicks here.. can someone guide me what they represent?

The colored nicks and badges show that they are either staff, subscribers, MVCs (Most Valued Contributors), or veterans. This is shown on the forum index, which shows the colors that represent each group:

Here's some information on the recent color changes

You know deep down that you want to talk about how worth it it was to get access to the privileged hunk thread.

:shiftyninja:

If more people would post in it, it would be more enjoyable. Sucks being one of two gay subscribers :p.

Thanks for subscribing :D

Me and Rappy try to make your extra little "Perk" worth every dollar :D I know some sites make you pay $5 a month to be a subscriber, where neowin only asks for $12 a year. Such a low price for the extra features you get.

    • O&O ShutUp10 3.1.1104 by Razvan Serea O&O ShutUp10 offers a simple yet effective way to take control of your Windows privacy. It provides access to almost 50 privacy-related tweaks, most of them hidden or not easily accessible to the average computer users. Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10/11 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated. Using ShutUp10 you can easily disable Windows Defender, turn off telemetry, disable peer-to-peer updates, turn off Wi-Fi Sense, disable automatic Windows updates, turn off and reset Cortana and more. ShutUp10 allows you to create a System Restore point before you apply any changes, so that you can revert your system at any time if you run into problems. O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days! O&O ShutUp10 Free and Premium The latest version brings O&O ShutUp10 Premium, expanding the app’s long-standing privacy controls with automatic enforcement of user-defined settings. Instead of manually rechecking options after every Windows update, users can set their preferred privacy configuration once—or apply recommended settings in a single click—and the tool continuously monitors them in the background. If Windows 10 or 11 re-enables disabled features or introduces new data collection paths, Premium restores the chosen settings automatically without user intervention. The free version remains available and fully functional for manual adjustments, offering the same core privacy controls for Windows. However, the Premium tier is aimed at users who want long-term, hands-off protection, adding automatic reapplication after updates, ongoing monitoring, and optional notifications to ensure privacy settings remain consistent over time. • Fascinating...W h i t e P o w e r is now also asterisks out.
    • In the past few days I have noticed two odd moderation activities. First, when I posted the term 'White Nationist Christian' it was asterisk's out. When I changed it to **** it was allowed! Second, in the Politics is a ###business thread I was allowed to post that the GOP is a party of p e d ophiles but I was censored  when I posted the GOP are a party of p e d ophile protectors. Wtf Neowin. Please explain.
