iPhone?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I think I am getting the iPhone. I just bought the LG Dare 2 months ago and don't get me wrong, I LOVE it but my girlfriend and I decided that we both love the iPhone and all the things you get with it. I am askin for some NON biased opinions on the iPhone. All the things I found online are out dated and talk about the preview version of the iPhone 3G. What are some of the Pros and Cons? How is the call quality? Would it be better to just get the iPod touch?

I've got an iPhone 3G, and I really can't see myself using any other phone quite the same way.

It's a fine telephone, and the applications from the app store really make me feel like it's somewhere between a netbook and a smartphone - kind of like a Mac in my pocket. Of course, the battery life isn't stellar if you're playing with it all day, but you could expect to get a day or two out of it without recharging under light use.

My call quality is generally fine, though I got dropped calls a-plenty when I first got it - the newer software updates (OS 2.1) really helped things for me.

If you are happy with your phone already, get the iPod touch in addition to your Dare. If you aren't happy with it or you want an all-in-on solution, try an iPhone.

Pro -

- It's pretty decent phone. The phone part is probably the best.

- Full Browser (when it doesn't crash)

- Mail is good as well.

- iPod is ok

- 3G speeds are nice

- GPS+Maps is very helpful at times. Well implemented

Cons -

- Battery life is bad.

- Safari crashes like hell

- App management is a nightmare

- You might start wondering why you need to reboot your phone this often

- You need to buy at least two accessories - screen protection and a sleeve, for this phone to survive daily use

- Mail never downloads large attachments for me over 3G.

If you are considering iPhone for Exchange support, forget it. Apple really dropped the ball.

- Calendar support is half hearted

- can't create meetings

- meeting reminders are stupidly implemented

- Mail.app has a tendency to not work at all if you have even one Exchange account (e.g. gmail + work)

Got one at the beginning of the month, probably going to return it for a Fuze though.

Pros:

  • Battery life isn?t as bad as some say. Got it to six days under light usage(no 3G/wifi). Which in my book is pretty good.
  • Apps store is well implemented. Can download programs from the phone itself.
  • AT&T seems to get reception than T mobile, in my area at least.
  • Pandora is kick ass on the iPhone!

Cons:

  • Really starting to hate Safari. Live mail didn?t work correctly(Safari refused to scroll all the way down). Have to scroll all the way to the top of pages in order to refresh and jumps to top when it finishes loading(which is a real pain for forums/ image boards).
  • No way to turn off the cellular radio but keep wifi on. But if you are sticking with AT&T?s plan, it won?t matter because you have unlimited data.
  • Soft keyboard is ? meh. Makes a lot of incorrect predictions imo.
  • If you don?t have your headphones in, even on silent, music will play through the built in speakers. This is a bit paranoid, I know, but I always double check when I first plug them in in public so that my music would start blaring on the bus ride to my classes. I guess it could also be a pro in certain circumstances though.

As for more technical pros and cons, I?m sure you can find them elsewhere online, and I won?t bore you with that unless you?re a real spec junkie.

Being that I have owned the iPhone for 2 months, I cannot see myself using another phone anytime soon.

dhan's cons are pretty much on point. However, my battery lasts me about 2 full days with about 5 hours of usage but that is because I disabled everything I do not use (location services, bluetooth, etc.) and I lowered my screen brightness to about 20% I'd guess. Of course, that does not compare to the 6 days I got on my Treo but I'd never go back to the Treo.

The iPhone is like a mini laptop on your hand. If it weren't for the appstore, I am sure I would get sick of the phone as many others would but the appstore is just lifting off.

As an owned of the iPhone 3G since launch day (July 11) I honestly can't see myself using any other device the same way, my iPhone allows me to do just about everything I need to do on the go with ease, it allows me to receive and make phone calls (obviously), send and receive email, and browse the internet along with a ton of other cool stuff; when someone asks me for directions to a location, my pull my iPhone out of my pocket and within 20 seconds we have an answer, if I need a phone number for a business I look it up in the Yellow Pages on my iPhone, if I want to read the latest news headlines without having to check a bunch of different websites, I fire up the Google Reader icon on my phone, it's the most addictive phone I've ever used and it's very useful. It has replaced my iPod, and it has also managed to replace my alarm clock.

In terms of battery life, I get about 3 days from a single charge with a few hours of usage per day, screen brightness is set to a comfortable setting (not blinding, but below half way) and I have it set to automatically adjust the brightness settings depending on the ambient lighting, I also have Location Services on, and both Bluetooth and 3G are turned off (I don't have 3G where I live, so I turn it off unless I am in the city where I can access it).

Overall, it's a great device and I would really recommend getting one.

Fixed it for ya. Yeah, I know how it works. ;)

But seriously, nothing beats hands-on.

Get one to try, and if you don't like it then return it.

Hit the nail on the damn head! LOL (Y)

Pros: You whip it out in front of girls and start using it, and they take off their clothes and **** you

Cons: You whip it out in front of guys and start using it, and they take off their clothes and **** you

:|

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I personally LOVE my Dare but as LTD pointed out....yeah. It makes more sense anyway that instead of paying $100+ per phone we can just spend $150 a month for two.

well i for myself didnt find safari to crash that often, tbh it didnt crash since 2.1 update at all.

the battery life is alright for me though definately not top of the pops...

but if it comes to mobile internet, you wont find anything better atm. there is some space for improvements but yea, the iphone is just best at that.

i tried other phones myself since i wasnt sure aswell when i bought my 3g back in september however, none of the phones felt so... "soft" in a good sense while browsing.

with my old phones i rather waited til i was home to check my facebook (when i still was there. ;) ) but now on the iphone i just do it without even thinking about it.

every morning it almost replaced my daily check of news sites, i can get up a little later since i check them on my way to school. ;)

get the right apps and youre on the safe side for almost every connection-related task.

there could be a physical feedback though when typing like a short vibrating but by now i really got really really fast typing with the iphone. a matter of getting used to something. =)

id say - buy it.

but then again its personal taste here that plays a huge role... just try it out in a store or something.

i would say, you wont regret it a bit. while it does have its downsides, certainly. =)

Cons -

- Battery life is bad.

Apparently it isn't worse than another phone. But the iPhone is so addictive that you end up using it all the time and losing all your battery!

- Safari crashes like hell

iPhone OS 2.2 is supposed to fix a couple of issues and it's out since today. Let's cross our fingers.

- App management is a nightmare

Why so? IMO the App Store was pretty well thought and I couldn't see anything better... You have the app or you don't have it, it downloads and installs automatically in the background, they are all regrouped in a single virtual store... I'd like to know your opinion on this

- You might start wondering why you need to reboot your phone this often

I don't have an iPhone... but I reboot when Safari crashes and freezes :p

- You need to buy at least two accessories - screen protection and a sleeve, for this phone to survive daily use

Yeah, because it's made of plastic. Wrong decision for Apple, it's not as recyclable as the previous model if I'm not wrong...

- Mail never downloads large attachments for me over 3G.

Hmmm... even if you say "download it, God dammit!!" ? They should let you.... and it works on a Wifi network you say..?

Cons -

- Battery life is bad.

It's actually the same as with the Palm Treo 650 and the Nokia N95 I own. I really do not see any difference in that. Sure, it's bad compared to the Nokia 3100 (it could do a full week on one charge).

- Safari crashes like hell

That's something some users have and most others do not. It's quite random. It doesn't crash very often in my case but some sites can make it crash (as I've seen with Opera and the Nokia browser as well).

- App management is a nightmare

You can either install from the phone itself (not a lot of phones are able to do that) or from iTunes. You can only get the apps that are in the iTunes Store. Apple decides what apps get into their store so that can be somewhat of a problem. It's also one of the big pro's on the iPhone: you have one place where you can get your apps which have been screened.

- You might start wondering why you need to reboot your phone this often

I'm wondering when I need to reboot it, had to do it just once or twice.

- You need to buy at least two accessories - screen protection and a sleeve, for this phone to survive daily use

Just don't drive over it would be a far better idea :) I dropped it once and it bounced back up. Didn't cause any damage (not even a scratch). Unlike my Treo 650 and N95 though, bits came flying off and it scratched the paint ont the devices (the only damage). If you need a screen protection and a sleeve I'm always wondering what on earth people are doing to there stuff. They're like people, they just need some TLC ;)

- Mail never downloads large attachments for me over 3G.

What would be the definition of "large" ? Email in general isn't meant to be used for transferring files. It can handle attachments and such but it becomes a real pain when sending big files (as in 10 MB and bigger).

The iPhone 3G pars with my Treo 650 when it comes to functionality and user experience. It really is a far better device then my N95 (it is slow and the GPS with Nokia Maps is a laugh, as is mail). If it were up to me I would've merged the Treo 650 and the iPhone 3G.

BTW 3G reception in the EU is far better than in the US. Speeds are really nice as is coverage. Not much problems here in the EU :)

I absolutely love the thing. You know how you buy a new toy, and eventually you just stop playing with the features, because your bored of them? We'll I still use apps daily on my iPhone, and would be lost without them

I've been using the iPhone 3G since late July and I found it to be the best device I ever used. Its web browsing, music/video, and gaming capabilities literally put every other phone to shame. If you find a number you wish to dial on a website, you can tap and it does the dialing for you; something most other phones can't do. Call quality is very clear. Its e-mail program is very good, although I haven't been able to test its support for MS Exchange.

However, even the iPhone 3G is not perfect and its biggest weakness is the camera. It's only 2 megapixels, doesn't have flash, and can't record videos without jailbreaking the device. Battery life is considerably lower than regular cellphones (2-3 days tops), but I read some articles stating it fared better than most other 3G smartphones on the market. The iPhone 3G also lacks MMS, Flash, Java, and the ability to edit Office documents; but all of those are currently being worked on (either by Apple or by 3rd parties) and should be available via new software in the near future.

I had one for about a week and sold it.

It was great for web browsing, almost useless apps, the gps was neat and the whole OS felt really smooth, it's definitely the most user friend setup I've used.

That being said, the battery life was poor, it wasn't as easy to switch to ring and vibrate off in one go as i'm used to and use a lot at work, the touch screen was nice for surfing the internet but not for texting especially after a few drinks. it wasn't as easy to turn off the alarm as with my other phone and although there are torch apps they were not as good as the torch on my w810i. I ended up going back to the w810i because to be honest whilst the internet and gps was cool, the novelty wore off. 99% of the time i know where i am, can get my email on my w810i (ok its not as pretty looking but it works) i don't really care about browsing the internet when i am outside, battery life is way better and its just easier. FOR ME.

It really depends on whether your happy with your current phone or not? for me I couldn't be happier with my Nokia N95 and I bought an iPod Touch. If the iPhone is anything like the Touch, it's an unbelievable device and is so easy to use it's not funny. Plenty of useful apps you can get for it and over all it's top notch (Y) However, the battery life is not so good, my Touch even with light use is dead usually in less then a day, I'm having to charge the thing all the time. My N95 on the other hand last days before needing a recharge. So as a portable multimedia device, you can't do better. As a phone, well feature wise it's great but battery life is a real let down.

EDIT: I know I was essentially comparing the Touch, not the iPhone. However, from what I've heard there is that much difference between the Touch and iPhone, other then the obvious feature differences. Also a colleague at work has a iPhone 2G and he also told me (at least with the 2G) the battery life was pretty poor and how he was always having to charge the thing.

I've had mine for months now, and like many people before me have said, you just don't seem to get bored of it. Me and my girlfriend chat ALOT on the phone, and I don't have any issues with the phone at all. Merging two calls into one, for example has worked, as putting people on hold and switching calls, so the phone side of things seems spot on. Beyond that though, there is a HEAP of cool stuff to play with before jumping into the App Store. From there, well... You'll wonder why Nokia or Sony Ericsson hadn't already done this.

I would not switch to any other phone (and prior to this, I ONLY used Sony Ericsson phones).

I love the iPhone, its such a wonderful device. There is just one thing I despise on it, and that's Safari. You have to scroll all the way to the top to reload or stop, when switching pages it automatically reloads the page (which is reeeeeeaaaaalllly annoying), and a bunch of other reasons I can't be bothered to type out. I wish Apple would take out the pole shoved up their *ss and let Opera be realeased on the App Store.
