[Ubuntu 8.10] Atheros wifi card not working

Recommended Posts

I'll try copying the file over and manually installing it.

As far as the madwifi drivers, I've heard some really bad things about them.

there is nothing wrong with the madwifi drivers for atheros chips. you really have no other options other than to try the ndiswrapper method.

Yes, the atk5k and 9k driver, they work better, but did not load this time, but should work with this card. MadWifi is half closed source and unmaintened (ath5k,9k is a complete rewrite from scratch after madwifi devs have been hired by atheros). Madwifi work really bad in 64 bit (sometime not at all) and have a lot of limitations. And on top of that, recent card (8 recent card) are supported only in the SVN version that have never been released.

never heard of atk5k or 9k. do you have a link to an installation guide ?

It is built in the kernel, no need to install anything now, it is probably the best reson why it is better, it just work out of the box and with every kernel release, no need to wait or use svn from madwifi.

sudo modprobe ath_pci

(2.6.26+ for 5k, 2.6.27+ for 9k)

okay well i will be installing ubuntu 8.04 x64bit this week. i know the wifi doesn't work out of the box. so what do i need to do to get it working without madwifi ?

8.10 come with the correct kernel, if you use 8.04, you will have to backport a newer kernel from debian repo or compile it yourself. I am not sure if you can find 2.6.27 in intrepid-backport repo.

yeah for 8.04 you have to use madwifi drivers from what ive read.

    • Not surprising at all. Apple got three months worth of marketing hype with the Macbook Neo's incredible low launch price. They have sowed the idea that the Neo is the best value laptop and that idea will last for years even though the value is no longer there. They do this every five years or so with a single new product that is amazing value which distracts from the rest of their products being horrendously overpriced.
    • I still use speccy on windows systems as a quick sysinfo thing. I know there's better but really it was the first one I used of its type
